While plowing a field, Farnsworth developed the idea for how television could work, inspired by those parallel furrows as a format to transmit an electronic signal. It is the inventor's passion and genius that come through in this picture-book biography that follows him from the three-year-old who drew schematics of train engines, to the teen who automated the clothes washer so he would have more time to read, to the young man who celebrated his invention. Krull's focus is on the boy genius becoming an inventor like his heroes, and only in a note does she mention his struggles with RCA and his bitterness later in life. Philo Farnsworth's story is incredible and inspiring!

I had to read several biographies written for a young audience as part of an assignment for graduate school and came across this title. It was an interesting and riveting read, especially so considering I had never even heard of Philo Farnsworth!

This inspiring picture book biography recounts the true life story of Philo Taylor Farnsworth, who was just a 14-year-old farmboy in 1920 when he had a brainstorm. Seeing the plow create rows of overturned earth, Philo found a way to create television by "breaking down images into parallel lines of light, capturing them and transmitting them as electrons, then reassembling them for a viewer." His school teacher, Mr. Tolman encouraged him to go to college where he thought Philo's genius would be given the recognition it deserved. Unfortunately, events would conspire against Philo. He was forced to leave college after his father's death and became his family's main breadwinner.

It was only eight years after his brilliant idea first came to Philo's mind that he was able to realize his dream of transmitting the world's first television image. The book ends at this point though the author's note at the back of the book mentions how Philo triumphed in his bid to invent TV but would not get credit for it during his lifetime. Philo was embroiled in a dispute with the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and never did get actual credit for inventing the television, especially since his patents expired and his ideas became public domain. It is an inspiring tale that will serve to fire young people's imaginations and motivate them to invent. Philo Farnsworth has finally received the acknowledgment and recognition denied to him all those years ago.

Philo Farnsworth was an inquisitive boy who had been interested in “anything mechanical” since he was a very small boy. Trains, telephones and phonographs were wondrous and magical inventions that excited and stirred his imagination. It was a passion that his father shared with him. He told his son about Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and their inventions. When his father was temporarily away on a work assignment, Philo, at the tender age of eight, was left in charge of the family. Perhaps as a result, he grew more mature than others his age. Bullies had a tendency to tease him because of his unusual name, but he turned away from them.

He enjoyed reading his grandmother’s Sears, Roebuck catalog and marveling over “cameras, alarm clocks, and machines that used a new, invisible source of power” called electricity. The most he got out of the catalog was a violin at the insistence of his grandmother, which tended to give more fodder for the bullies. There was something about this electricity business and the elusive “television” scientists were working on. Philo’s mind never seemed to stop thinking about it. Wait . . . there was something about the plowed “rows of dirt” that turned a switch on in his fourteen-year-old mind. Was this the solution the scientists had been looking for to make pictures “fly through the air?”

This was a fascinating story of a young man who was nudged out and almost forgotten even though he invented “one of the greatest inventions of the twentieth century.” I loved the way the story was told because it gave great insight into Philo’s character and why he was not credited with his invention. The artwork was very “period” looking and quite appealing. The end papers are filled with a large variety of television sets that span the ages. This book is a Junior Library Guild Selection that both old and young alike will enjoy!

The Boy Who Invented TV: The Story of Philo Farnsworth by Kathleen Krull and illustrated by Greg Couch is yet another wonderful picture book about a young man having the courage to continue and solving science before anyone else! Farnsworth went through his daily life always wondering how the world worked. Philo Farnsworth, the young inventor, develops and then discovers how to transmit images electronically, while plowing the fields, which leads to the invention of the first TV. With the help of his wife, Philo gets his wife to be the first person on TV. The book is a wonderful book that shows courage of a young boy from a young age of three all the way up to a young married man, imagining, creating, and having the will to continue no matter how many people were negative and those who didn't have faith for him. This book is an encouraging book for young readers to continue on their determinations no matter how negative people can be.

Great book: requires rewrite/revision; excellent for concept

Colloidal Dispersions is an excellent text, both for graduate students and for physicists/physical chemists foraying into the field of colloidal dispersions. The book starts by talking about particle hydrodynamics, then introduces Brownian motion and follows it up with description of different interaction forces experienced by colloidal particles. Thereafter, it discusses the thermodynamics of polymer in solution, how it affects the forces between the particles. In following chapters, it details the electrokinetic phenomena, and the physics of polymer mediated and charged mediated stabilization. The last few chapters return to dynamics again, with a chapter each devoted to sedimentation and rheology!

The book is beautifully written, and most of the material is useful as it is. Since this book was written in 1989, it requires a revision to bring it to the level of current understanding. The whole realm of nanoparticles is based on principles described here, as is the field of colloidal self-assembly. With a revision and few additions here and there, and maybe addition of some references to the work done between 1989-2005, the book can be made into workhouse of all colloidal scientists. I highly recommend this book to everyone interested in understanding the physical behavior of colloids. Coming with a background in Statistical Mechanics would be certainly helpful, and for people with training in Polymer Physics, the book can be understood by drawing analogies with the concepts used there. This is one of the best book in terms of the balance between the use of equations and words used to present physical picture and definitely one everyone in the field must read:) But as I said before, I will be greatly indebted to authors if they bring out a revised edition: I hope they do so soon!!

Good for Grad Students

This book, despite not being updated for about a decade, is still at the top of its class... This book should be on the desk of every scientist who is interested in interparticle forces. This book covers the theory and the development of colloid science from its early days to modern times. It is likely to be useful for theorists who will lean on the math and good references in the book and useful to experimentalists who seek to understand interparticle forces. Most experimentalists will probably also want to buy Jacob Israelachvili's book, which I haven't read much of, but I know Israelachvili is the man behind the surface forces apparatus (SFA), so many who seek to measure the interparticle forces described in WBR's book will want Jacob's book as well.
I am a graduate student at Princeton, home to the authors, and, not surprisingly, this book is a strong reflection of two courses in the chemical engineering department called Colloidal Dispersions I and II. I'm taking the series now, and, if you are in the class, you already know you need the book, and you shouldn't be reading this review.
I'd give the book 5 stars instead of 4, but I feel that it needs to be updated to reflect the increasing use of computer simulations (Note that I am biased, as a computer person) and new developments in colloid science. And lastly, though I feel the book is highly readable, the math is intense, and I suspect there are many scientists and engineers (myself included) who will have wished WBR had skipped fewer steps. Largely though, you can't blame the authors for that. The book would be a million pages long if they didn't skip steps. Try to use the extensive references to fill in the steps in the math if possible.
On a value basis, a 4 star book that costs only 2/3 what you usually pay means you are getting a steal here.

If you are intersted in colloidal forces this is a great text. it does not have a huge breadth of information but it does a very good job of covering what makes colloids stable. it covers DLVO theory solutions in several geometries, taking PB theory pretty much as far as it can go. Well, you can go further, but its pretty good.

I would recommend this one to any cycle enthusiast; however I did miss:
- More mechanical facts
- A more thorough coverage of all models (e.g. the 800 sporstster is barely mentioned)

Great grab-bag of computer graphics topics

This book is a collection of articles written from the late 80's through the mid 90's about various computer graphics topics. Even though the book doesn't look serious, it does a very good job of explaining several rather complex computer graphics topics better than many other much more expensive textbooks on the subject. Mathematics is clearly explained when needed, and there is some pseudocode included. Since each chapter is an article totally independent of all others, I shall review each article/chapter separately:
1. How Many Ways Can You Draw a Circle?
For people who can program and who can draw points and lines on some system this is a splendid introduction to the way math is used in computer graphics. The "exercises" range from easy to medium hard.
2. What, Teapots Again?
Martin Newell's Teapot is the trademark of computer graphics. The GLUT library for OpenGL has a pre-computed object called the teapotahedron, right along with the dodecahedron and the icosahedron. Here are the coordinates if you want a teapotahedron of your very own in whatever graphics system you want.
3. Nested Transformations and Blobby Man
This is a classic exercise in how matrix algebra makes articulation trees easy to program. It basically uses a set of scaled and translated geometric primitives such as spheres to "build up" the crude figure of a man. This chapter might be useful to robotics students looking for a project.
4. Platonic Solids
The platonic solids are widely used as sample objects. They are the tetrahedron, hexahedron, octahedron, icosahedron, and dodecahedron. Blinn intends this to be a "hip pocket" program for the five platonic solids, something you can tuck away in your memory. OpenGL+GLUT has all these solids as primitives, so this is something you should study once as part of your general computer graphics education.
5. How to Write a Paper for SIGGRAPH
Chapters 5,7,12 and 20 are more about programmers than about programming. It makes for amusing reading, and if you take Blinns advice to heart now, you may improve your technical writing style in other areas too.
6. Me and My (Fake) Shadow
It should be mentioned beforehand that this methods merely allows shadows to be cast on flat ground. This means two things: it can only be used to cast a shadow on a flat surface AND it can only cast the shadow of one object. Blinn admits to having first attempted a hack approach to solve the problem in an unintuitive but slightly quicker way. He also presents his revised methodical approach and shows problems with it.
7. Things I Hope Not to See or Hear at SIGGRAPH
Talks about what makes a bad presentation - Talks read verbatim, illegible slides, micro-sized text, magenta lines on a cyan background, the entire talk echoed on slides, the fading voice, "I'm Almost Out of Time so I'll Just Run Through the Rest of These Slides Real Fast.", "Uh, I Guess That's All I Have to Say."
8. Where Am I? What Am I Looking At?
A generalization of the lookat transformation that Blinn used in space movies. This is pretty advanced unless you've had a course in linear algebra.This chapter is also a very compact summary of what you know after you have worked with the graphics pipeline for a while.
9. The Three-Dimensional Kaleidoscope
Some playing with 3D groups to make related polyhedra and other interesting shapes. This is an interesting entry portal to the whole subject of symmetry. It goes with the Platonic Solids chapter, but can be done independently. This article encourages greater artistic experimentation and free-form design for a smaller investment of effort than the other chapters so far.
10. Fractional Invisibility
A way to remove most of the singuarites in quantitative invisibility types of hidden line algorithms, this is definitely an advanced subject. OpenGL provide a z-buffer which makes the techniques described here necessary only for special parts of computational solid geometry (CSG).
11. Optimal Tubes
A simple modelling primitive for long cylinders that takes into account the viewpoint, this is also an advanced subject. If you ever get a job designing chemical structures or space stations you may need to digest this material, although programming tools are generally available which incorporate this wisdom.
12. The Ultimate Design Tool
This is a more serious piece of advice than it might first seem. Unless a computer graphics programmer can visualize and sketch with pencil and paper there is little chance for fluency and efficiency in their work. This is essential reading.
13. Line Clipping
This is a chapter from a regular course on computer graphics. This is good example of what people do in the field of computational geometry, which is one of the abstract or technical fields behind the applied field of computer graphics.
14. Pixel Coordinates
Mapping the continuous range -1...+1 to pixel coordinate values and how it is usually done wrong.
15. Subpixelic Particles
How to map sub-pixels to regular pixels for subsampling. Chapters 14 and 15 are definitely advanced. A cursory reading will give you an idea of what happens at the very end of the pipeline, the part most computer graphics courses skip.
16. Grandpa, What Does "Viewport" Mean?
The matter treated in this chapter is at the heart of all modern windowing systems. Despite all the things "windows" systems can do, be they Apple, Microsoft, or Sun, they can't help you do anything original, like non-rectangular windowing.
17. Hyperbolic Interpolation
Discusses how to interpolate colors and texture indices onto objects viewed in perspective. This chapter is really about homogeneous coordinates, and those are at the heart of the geometry pipeline. This is definitely advanced, because it requires an understanding of matters discussed in the next chapter.
18. The Homogeneous Perspective Transform
How the perspective transform works in homogeneous coordinates.
19. Backface Culling Snags
More on drawing solids quickly. Rather more computerish than mathematical.
20. Farewell To FORTRAN
This chapter is largely out of date. It is only a part of what Jim Blinn had to say about the "language wars" back in 1994. Of course, now nobody really needs to be coaxed from FORTRAN to C++.
