About the Author
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a Japanese artist and ukiyo-e painter of the Edo period, and best-known as the author of the woodblock print series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji".
Kazuya Takaoka was born in Kyoto in 1945. As a graphic designer, he has received many outstanding awards, including the Gold Medal at the Japan Graphic Design Exhibition and the Gourmond World Cookbook Award for Best Cookbook Design. Among his works include Noh: Classical Japanese Performing Art published by PIE BOOKS.

Ambitious but disappointing edition of important work

When I first heard this edition of Hokusai's Manga was coming out, I was thrilled. There have been several attempts to print hilights of this massive ukiyo-e work, with varying degrees of success. After the French book published in 2007, I was really hoping that level of quality would be brought to this much larger collection of panels. Sadly, the truism that 'Less is more' still stands; at least in regards to this edition.

I hadn't taken note of the size indicated for the book before I saw it, so I was already wary seeing how much larger it was than the original Manga. On opening it to one of the true reproduction spreads (more on that in a moment), I saw the plates were in fact reproduced actual size. The remaining space was taken up by a massive margin of perhaps three inches, and a garish, heavy, double red outline around the art itself. The images themselves were decent, with good solidity to the keyblock blacks and fairly smooth capturing of the gray and peach plates. Not quite the quality of the French collection, which even captured the paper tone, but decent, and maybe a bit better than the massive, complete 900 page edition printed in Japan. But why the large size?

I started flipping through the book, and realized it wasn't simply a straightforward reproduction of the original pages. Perhaps half of the edition is made up of massive enlargements of panels in glaring red ink, and even individual characters blown up even larger. Not sure what the designer's intent was here, but I think it does a disservice to the original work. If there were already an affordable, large collection of the Manga available, I might understand more. Here and there, blowing up the characters helps bring emphasis to the varying thickness of line Hokusai and the carvers used. But to fill up so many pages this way is a distraction.

So for Hokusai fans hoping for 690 pages of faithful reproductions, you will be disappointed. I would recommend the Japanese edition from Shogakukan, which I bought for around $145. It has the entire contents of all 15 Manga volumes, fairly well printed. The blacks could be better in spots and the grays and peaches can get splotchy but I don't know how much of that is due to the publisher and how much involves the state of the original wookblock editions they had access to. Because each volume was originally printed by hand, the quality of the prints are dependent on how well the individuals burnished the paper onto the inked blocks (they used a pad called a baren, which was moved in swirls over the back of the sheets).

There is also Michener's "Hokusai Sketchbooks" from 1958. Here, to solve the cost issue of trying to replicate the original three colors using a modern four-color press, the art was shot high-contrast to separate out the blacks. The gray and peach inks were then replicated as mixed inks. The effect is a bit different from the original books, but still decent. The paperback editions by Unsodo of Japan aren't very good, but they do start out with 16 accurately printed spreads, on glossy paper. It then devolves into high-contrast reproductions of the pages with no supporting tone at all. Many of the original spreads are printed small, with four on one page. The French edition is still the best, though sadly short.

Currently the best way I know of to view the Manga in a way similar to how someone would have seen it in the early Nineteenth Century actually involves modern technology. Visipix.com has a large collection of digital images from various Hokusai works, including the complete manga. No worries of replicating inks here. So if, like me, you want this great work in print, aside from investing the money into the original woodblock editions (or later reproductions from recut blocks), looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer for a publisher to try again.

Great, but could have been better

This is a nice book, with great paper and even a nice little obi to go along with it. More could have been used for the size of the book, though. This book includes b & w originals and enlarged red images. The black and white illustrations are in original size, making them sit awkwardly in the middle of the page. This is a fundamental bad design though- often, the images, being in the middle, are put in the gutter. The gutter is the part where the book is binded, so the middle of the images are cut off. It's like putting an important image in a magazine right in the middle, between the two pages- it gets cut off and distorted. Not good. A lot of Hokusai's animals- my favorites like the lion in the snow, were put in the gutter, and thus cut off. It doesn't make sense, though- with the size of this book, many of the images cut off in the gutter could have just been put on one side of a page. They don't have to be put in the middle with so much room...
The best thing about this book is very minimal writing. As one studying to be a tattoo artist in the future, all of the refernce material is nicely uninterrupted by text. However, this will be a book where the reference is hard to find, as this book is unpaginated entirely. Also, images are organized my which of the 15 manga they belong to. With unpaginated pages, they should have just put everything in order by subject. The animals I'll use for reference are all over the place!
This book is over 600 pages, but it's really only about 400 in terms of material. This is why the book mainly gets three stars. I was hoping for over 600 pages in materials- this would amount to atleast 2/3 of the total manga. There was a 623 page version printed in Japan (not talking about the huge 900 page versions), and I was hoping this would be just like it. I was wrong. The red images are really nice, but they're just reproductions of other existing images in the book. They're like previews before the b & w images. This is one of my gripes as soon as I opened the book- pages where only one or two red images were reproduced could have been used for more material. It was kind of a waste. I'd recommend putting the big red reproductions as the main images in the book( since the originals are quite small), and using the remaining space for more Hokusai manga. You're not really getting a 623 page book. I'd recommend the Carlo edition (with the Wave of Kanagawa as the cover), which is 520 pages, and the black and white illustrations are much bigger than original size- that book is huge, but atleast the images are big enough to match it!
A great book that is a wonder to look through and will greatly help my tattoo ideas, but so much potential is wasted. I was really looking towards what seemed like the biggest English language edition of the mangas- without paying over $100 for an imported Japanese version- but looks like I'll be waiting.

Showing the real and the grotesque ...

When I was traveling in Japan, I saw this almost 400 page book and would have purchased it except that there was no room left in the suitcases. As it turned out, it was a good decision since Amazon offers it for almost half the price I would have paid in Japan. It is interesting art with the stress being on people, though there are numerous illustrations of insects, fish, animals, and landscape. Most of the people shown are as being normal, though many are in contorted positions. Some art shows grotesque figures, as for example, legs as long as five foot stilts! The edition offered by Amazon also includes a translation into English to give more depth to the thousands of artistic renderings. The best reproductions in my estimation are those which are in black and white, with flesh tones. There are also a large number of pages that show the drawings in red ink with most being less clear than the black/white art work. I understand that the illustrations here are from the fifteen original books produced in Japan in the 19th century - not every illustration, but surely enough, thousands of them, to educate and intrigue most artists and collectors. To purchase copies of the 15 original books would cost a small fortune. I know - I saw used facsimile copies of some volumes for sale at a museum store in Osaka. The volume offered by Amazon is a well-made paperback - I don't believe a hard cover edition is available - but even as it is the book weighs over four pounds, and measures 8" x 12" x 2" thick! The non-glare paper seems to have been selected especially for these drawings. It is a great value for those interested in Hokusai, or Japanese woodblock art, or for the younger generation, Japanese Manga. GJV

An unassuming grey book with interesting insights into sights usually unseen.

It appears to be an unassuming grey book. The words “Post Mortem" are printed in black typeface. As an object, Patrik Budenz's book Post Mortem is delicate to hold, light in weight, simple and clean, much like the environments represented in the photographs, once you open the cover: the environment of the modern day mortuary.

Mortuaries were not always a de facto part of death. Prior to industrialization, most people died at home in the company of family, who were also responsible for the deceased's body. Today, most people die alone, and their bodies are transported from their residences or care facilities to the local mortuary where they are cleaned and prepared for either cremation or viewing.

The idea of mortuaries can conjure up grim, unsettling imagery from movies and television, but Budenz eschews the sensationalist approach for a compassionate, respectful insight into the processes and preparations for the recently deceased.

The first image sets a direct, reflective tone with a large metal shelving array, neatly filled with corpses in translucent body bags, toe tags exposed. The images immediately following are close ups of the recently dead. In one photo we see a face, lips puckered, ashen. Beyond it we can see sutures stretching on along the length of the entire chest. Budenz uses a subdued colour in his photos, emphasizing the absence of life, and often shoots his subjects uncomfortably close. Though they are not gruesome, the images grip us with the realization that life no longer inhabits these bodies.

In five sections, unnamed and unnumbered, Budenz walks us through the various stages of a body's transition through the mortuary. The images show us the surgical aspects of preparing the body, and the process of transforming a lifeless body to look the way they did when alive. Photographs of white linen and lace here underscore a sense of purity and serenity.

Later, Budenz peers into the cremation oven. A closed casket enters a large kiln; a flame-engulfed skeleton shrivels in the heat, until all that remains is the metal fastenings that held together the casket. The images of this formal, sterile process of handling human bodies work together to remind us of our inevitable return to dust. With tenderness, Post Mortem takes the viewer into a passage we are all destined to cross through.

Waste of money!

Very disappointed! The book was expensive and I was so looking forward to it. The photos were good, BUT there were no words to explain the photos. It would have been nice to get a little description with the photos. And the size of the book!! Again, for the money I spent, I was expecting more. A larger book with more content!!

The book discusses fundamental computer science concepts such as abstraction, repetition, condition, and recursion through real-world problems such as personal finance, population growth, DNA sequence, and earthquake analysis. The book is designed for a CS 1 course for majors, a CS 0 course for nonmajors with omissions, or a basic computing course for natural or social sciences students. Traditional introductory computer science content is well covered, though in a different way compared to most other introductory books. Most other introductory CS books would arrange the topics either around features of programming such as objects, variables, repetitions, conditions, and functions, or around data structures or algorithms such as list, array, graph, search, and sorting. About the Author

Jessen Havill is a professor of computer science and the Benjamin Barney Chair of Mathematics at Denison University, where he has been on the faculty since 1998. Dr. Havill teaches courses across the computer science curriculum, as well as an interdisciplinary elective in computational biology. He was awarded the college's highest teaching honor, the Charles A. Brickman Teaching Excellence Award, in 2013.

Dr. Havill is also an active researcher, with a primary interest in the development and analysis of online algorithms. In addition, he has collaborated with colleagues in biology and geosciences to develop computational tools to support research and teaching in those fields. Dr. Havill earned his bachelor's degree from Bucknell University and his Ph.D. in computer science from The College of William and Mary.

Engaging, entertaining, enlightening

This book is incredibly easy to follow when compared to other computer science textbooks, and is written in a style that is both entertaining and engaging. The book is arranged according to a progression of computational concepts rather than as a manual of the Python language, and emphasizes development of problem-solving skills over memorization of methods and function. The book also boasts a massive number of exercises and projects of varying difficulty levels, to cumulatively apply the concepts that have been taught over the course of the book. All in all, one of the best computer science textbooks out on the market.

Roller-coaster existentialism, and fun, too!

"Watt" is the hilarious story of an itinerant character who walks one day from a train station, like a homing pigeon, straight to the home of a man whom he will serve. He enters the kitchen to take his spot, whereupon the present kitchen worker issues a rambling monologue of stunning length and baffling content, then leaves the household for Watt to stay behind. In the first few pages, we are already asking: Why did Watt just show up? Whose house is this? Who is this man in the kitchen already? Why is he delivering this major dissertation? What does it all mean?
The rest of the book concerns Watt's service to the master of the house, some of it conventionally narrated, much of it digressive and odd. To explain this book, however, is to sound ridiculous. A certain number of things happen to Watt, he takes a certain number of actions, he engages in a certain number of conversations, and he ends the story in the book in a certain meaningful fashion. The entire story is told in Beckett's trademark effusive style, a rollicking, bizzare, but highly entertaining profusion.
The meaning of the book is also classic Beckett: Don't wait for Higher Meaning, because there is none. All his books portray absurd characters doing absurd things, waiting for life to reveal itself, but ultimately realizing that life reveals itself through the living. To answer the questions posed above, the book is compsed like a circle, just like life. At the same time, it's also completely meaningless, just like life. We go to some place, we stand in some position, we engage with some people, we commit some acts, we turn and commit other acts, and we engage with some other people. Somehow, among all this ballet, the world still turns, and we still live upon it. For all their foolish sounding, Beckett's books do indeed have a meaning, that life is just the living of it.
Beckett is a psychological master. His prose style will never be repeated. I'd call him the Babe Ruth or Michael Jordan of literature, a crude analogy, for which we should apologize, but it is one that we hope reflects the major impact of his work on the art, and his primacy among its literary practitioners.
Beckett's work is random by no means. It is carefully crafted, and has an internal rhythm all its own. If a reader is willing to take off their shoes and run through the squishy mud of Beckett's life-swamp, so to speak, it is a joy to read and great fun to reflect upon. "Watt" is a good example of his work, relatively short, and relatively simple, but still likely to provoke great consternation among any who are not used to Beckett's gushing and admirable style, but great enjoyment among those who take it on its own life-affirming terms.
Beckett is a great writer for those readers who seek a literary puzzle, a semantic challenge, and a story with a surreal whiff, which tells us how wonderful it is just to be alive, enjoying our time on earth. "Watt" is one of Beckett's more accessible and fun works.

Funny AND Avant-garde

This novel is SO funny! I know it's an avant-garde masterpiece and all, but it's also hilarious. I guess if we read it straight, we would have to conclude that the protagonist, Watt, is schizophrenic, along with the narrator also, probably. The characters are not realistic. Plot actions seem completely random and unmotivated. Watt's characteristic action is to consider every possibility in every situation, and every possible combination of possibilities. There's one part that had me laughing out loud. Watt is some kind of minor servant in a household, and his orders are to feed the leftovers to the dog. But there is no dog! So Watt dreams up all these far-fetched and absurd schemes for finding a dog to feed the leftovers to. I couldn't stop laughing, but my friends say I have a weird sense of humor.

It's so hard to get good help in a Beckett novel...

To a house in the country comes an enigmatic man named Watt to take the place of an outgoing servant in the household staff of a man equally enigmatic, Mr. Knott. From this commonplace beginning, Samuel Beckett weaves a most uncommon tale that can perhaps only be accurately described as...well, Beckettian.

Watt is of that distinctive tribe of shabby, decrepit, stumblebums who are regularly featured as "heroes" of Beckett's work. In the case of the present novel, Watt becomes obsessively preoccupied with the habits, duties, and peccadilloes of the other household staff and, in particular, of his erstwhile new employer, the aforementioned, Mr. Knott. Clever how Beckett has Watt--a cipher himself--trying to decipher another cipher, Mr. Knott. To Watt, his employer, who he eventually comes to dress and undress, remains an elusive albeit binding mystery. But then virtually everything presents itself as a mystery to Watt and becomes the subject of long, tortured, and mostly humorous super-logical speculations that seek to take every possible explanation into account for even the most mundane phenomenon--with invariably absurd results. What you have is the literary equivalent of the old proverb of the spider who asked the centipede how it manages to walk with all those legs--and the centipede trying to explain suddenly finds he can't take another step without falling. The same sort of paralysis grips Watt's efforts to understand Mr. Knott and, for that matter, the absurdity of life in general. It's an affliction very common to characters in Samuel Beckett's work--and probably one that strikes a sympathetic chord in the experience of his most appreciative readers.

Indeed, significant portions of *Watt* will likely try the patience of lesser fans comprised as these portions are of quasi-Biblical lists of absurd comprehensiveness, extended series of repetitions detailing, for instance, all the possible permutations a man might manage when shodding his feet with the customary footwear available to him each morning: a shoe, a boot, a sock, and a slipper. Like a lot of Beckett, these kinds of ridiculously exhaustive lists of minutiae gather a certain sort of power and poetry when read aloud, but they are nearly impossible to get through with any profit while reading silently on a crowded bus, let's say.

On the other hand, *Watt,* like *Mercier and Camier* is quite a bit more conventional than Beckett's later fiction; though, of course, "conventional" in regard to Beckett is a relative term. In this case, *Watt* features genuine dialogue, a range of character viewpoints, and, if not a plot in the ordinary sense, than a plot in the extraordinary sense.

Mordant, ribald, dark, and grotesque, not to mention slapstick, sometime Three Stooges-like funny, *Watt* may not be Beckett at his peak, but he's clearly on his way--and Beckett anywhere on the climb is head and shoulders above just about anyone else.

About the Author
J. Michael Jacob has published several internationally popular texts on analog integrated circuits and industrial control electronics, as well as a variety of papers and conference presentations on the art and technology of teaching. Professor Jacob's teaches at Purdue University and has received a number of awards and honors, including the Purdue University's undergraduate teaching award (the Amoco award), the Paradigm Award from the Minority Technology Association and the Joint Services Commendation Medal (for excellence in instruction) from the Secretary of Defense. In 1999 he was listed in Purdue University's Book of Great Teachers. He has taught at Purdue for 25 years and at Florence Darlington Technical College in South Carolina for seven years. Mr. Jacob has six years of industrial experience as a test engineer in the automotive and aerospace industries.
