Inspirational personal story of chronic pain sufferer

This is one of the best books I've read on living with chronic pain, from first hand experience of a man who was severely injured in a climbing accident. It is very inspiring, motivating, faith based, hope producing. There are some quotes from this book that I remind myself of on a regular basis. I have recommended it to several people and given it as a gift to at least 2 friends who suffer with chronic pain.

Great! Makes you appreciate how fortunate you are if you can get up and go to work. If you can take care of yourself and move relatively pain free, you are not fortunate, you are REALLY fortunate. You need to be thankful for that blessing. His point is that God is good regardless of your situation. We are just so used to everything going our way. God is at work in your life whether you would have chosen the situation you are in right now or not.

Best Book for Follows of Jesus Who Have Chronic Pain

This is hands down THE best book for a person who is a follower of Jesus, and who has chronic pain. A book I pass on to many friends. I re-read it from time to time just to remind me. THis is written by a person who fell off the side of a mountain and lives with pain. He speaks the language of pain, and he does not speak "Christianize"-he truly understands the dichotomy of being a person of faith, and a person whom God has not healed and who lives with pain all the time. I could not recommend it higher. It's on my website. And my story of pain is on You-Tube under my name.

Along the way Dr. Aris develops a delightful list of useful maxims for would-be modellers. In the final chapter he deals not only with the empirical validation of models but also with the comparison of models among themselves, as well as with the extension of a model beyond its original "domain of validity."
Filled with numerous examples, this book includes three appendices offering further examples treated in more detail. These concern longitudinal diffusion in a packed bed, the coated tube chromatograph with Taylor diffusion and the stirred tank reactor. are we reading the same book ?!?

I read the previous two reviews and purchased this book... and now I am quite disappointed. Frankly, I wonder if these reviews are made by real users, or...

First of all, this book is a mere reprint of a 1978 edition. The fonts are typewriter-style of three decades ago, so symbols are awkward and difficult to read. Many drawing and sketches are handwritten.

The first two chapters it talks in general about what is a model. These chapters are mainly philosophical, pretty boring in my opinion.

The third chapter "How to formulate a model" should contain what I was looking for. However, it describe in very general terms how you can put down a model. The description is in my opinion too general, discussing trivial well known principles. There is not a clear, well-stated method of approach. I expected a discussion based on examples of real life problems, firstly simple ones then going to more complex ones. Instead the author make a foggy presentation on how to deal with a problem, jumping to another one, without a clear line of thought.

The treatment is incredibly jumpy: the third equation of this chapter is already involving integrals, page 38 starts with "How to formulate a model", page 41 there is an example involving triple integrals on a volume...

If you are interested in a modern book that guides you or your students to the art of putting down a mathematical model of a system you want to describe, I do not think this book is for you and I do not suggest you to purchase it.

Honestly, I have no idea how this book can be useful at all these days.

Mathematical Modelling Genius

One thousand word limit to this review, eh? Well, I could do it in one word: Fantastic.
This book approaches mathematical modelling from a conceptual level, with Rutherford explaining how to make numbers dance through equations any which way you want them. His depth of knowledge as a Chemical Engineer, combined with his fantastic mathematical skills means that he has knows what needs to be done in various situations and how best to do it.
The attribute that makes this, and all of Rutherfords work stand out from the rest of the pack, is his undeniable presence when writing. Rhetoric, personal insights and may the dry-and-dusty-academic world forgive him, humour (!) can be found throughout this book, making its reading quite pleasurable.
Finally, a number of thoughtful articles of his have been bound into the back of this edition, providing useful "food for thought" for those people for whom modelling is a way of life. If you are considering any of the finer points of mathematical modelling (I was doing a PhD on the subject), this book is a must-have (not just a must-read). You'll come back to it time and time again for the articles, long after you've digested the rest of the book.

Despite it's age, the book has a lot to give to those who already have experience in the field of mathematical modelling and who certainly will see through the oddities of the book and appreciate its many subtleties. The book is affordable and is well written, albeit in a form that seems "ancient". The author was not only an outstanding scientist but also a gifted writer and a highly educated person. His prose might therefore feel strange for people not used to read philosophical or more verbose "social science"-type texts. I enjoyed the book indeed, but I would not recommend it as your first approach to mathematical modelling. For that purpose you might choose Edward A. Bender's book instead.

Well worth the price

I have put myself through the wringer with regard to the formal education process and this book is like a breath of fresh air. It shows you how to self-educate yourself and more importantly how to authenticate what you know. Just recently, I engaged in a self-education project where I made almost exclusive use of on-line resources and my approach to sharing my knowledge was to write an e-Book and post it on my school website but Race explains a variety of approaches that I might have used instead.

I am at the point in my working life where I am taking stock of my professional knowledge and looking to pave the way for my next step. If you are are at this same point in your professional or personal life then Race's book is well worth a read. If you are thinking about an alternative to formal education processes then I would suggest you look at this book too.

A strategic path to teaching yourself anything!

In a lot of ways, this book is organized similarly to the Personal MBA. The big picture is explained, then a whole lot of strategies are suggested, and then resources are listed. It's also certainly motivating!
Self education is tricky business. You have to stay motivated, accountable, organized, and keep on the same course for a long period of time. The good thing about college is that it forces you to invest a whole bunch of time and money in something, forcing you to work it off somehow. The most unmotivated people I know are the ones who don't prioritize their own time. They would rather be lazy than take a risk. Time is the one thing life is made of! College helps you focus on a path for at least a couple years.
Bannon has a lot of criticisms of college, and rightfully so. Honestly, I don't think professors are the right method of teaching. 4 years is a long time, and many skills could be taught much quicker. Most of the important things I learned in college had little to do with my major. I still consider it a decent value, though.
I guess I'm getting off topic. I definitely recommend this book if you are interested in teaching yourself something!! However don't get it to learn about how college is a waste of time! I don't know why the author spent so much time on that subject...

Good content but horrendous format

The content of this book is solid. The information is all current to the IRC and there are lots of helpful illustrations. The problem is that the book looks like it was formatted by a 5th grader for her art project. There are a dizzying amount of colors, fonts, graphic excess, side bars, boxes, icons, etc used on each page. Apparently things are highlighted according to educational STEM (science, engineering, technology, & math). So each mention of something related to S, T, E or M is color coded.

This is definitely not a professional reference book. A good portion of the content is grade school type tangents such as this blurb along side the section on lumber grades: "Life Science: Green plants make their own food. Through photosynthesis, glucose...is formed....where does the sugar go? Starting Hint: Sugar is food." And each section has vocabulary sections, critical thinking exercises, standardized test practice, etc.

This is a serious reference book dressed up as a child's text book which makes it very annoying to use. Save your eyeballs and buy one of the earlier non-student versions.

Good book for passing BLD exam

This book helped me pass the BLD tech exam for Virginia. If you are taking the exam my advice is to actually read this book. I made the mistake of thinking I could flip through it and get the answers I needed to pass the exam since it was open book.

Vibrant, passionate, and real.

It's pretty rare for me to take the time to write a review online, but I'm making an exception.

This book is beautiful.

The author manages to take a familiar trope, that of old friends gathering together to celebrate a life event, and imbues it with new life and meaning. Themes are reminiscent, but in no way derivative of, The Big Chill. The novel has a solid and tactile sense of place -- the coastal Texas setting is so real, you can smell the salt air.

The real star of The Luckiest, however, is the characters. Aaron and Nik's romance is brimming with the kind of passion that can only be brought about by a long, unwilling separation. Nik's determination to win Aaron over again, despite a singularly heartbreaking breakup, brings to mind Jane Austen's Persuasion. The extended cast of vibrant characters are rich with detail, and rarely if ever fade into the background -- their stories feel as real and as present as Aaron and Nik's main-plot romance, and their relationships with each other feel authentic.

The Luckiest is that rare romance novel that sticks with you long after you've set it down. I found myself reading slower and slower, just to prolong the pleasure of reading; after I finished, I wandered around the house smiling at nothing -- and everything.

I have been eagerly anticipating this book since it was announced, and it was definitely worth the wait!

The Luckiest follows Aaron, a Texan who is currently making it in New York City as he travels back home for a whirlwind weekend helping throw a wedding for his best friend. The fact that his best friend is marrying the best friend of his former love complicates things a tad, but the story sparkles with their careful (and maybe not so careful) return to each other's orbit, all set to the backdrop of a beautiful Texas week.

The Luckiest brought back sharp memories for me of that on the cusp era of just post-college when everything and nothing seemed possible all at once. The people involved in your life at that time are so important to your formation of self, and reading as Nik and Aaron rediscovered each other all while in the presence of the friends and family that shaped their original bond was what made this book work so well for me. I will say that while there are other character to root for, I was so focused on Nik and Aaron that I did let the auxiliary friends fade into the background a bit. It was no loss to me, though!

Also, McWarren's ability to describe not only amazing sexual connections, but the emotional side of those connections, is superb. It doesn't feel like a gay romance novel in any way, but a novel about the enduring connection between two humans. It helps as well that this book has a great level of diversity, in a way that feels authentic and not overdone, and completely true to its Texas setting. I'm so thrilled to have this on my digital shelf to turn to time and time again, and to lend to all my friends.

2.5 Stars, I Had to Force Myself to Finish

I had 2 big problems with this story. First, there were too many characters. It became confusing to keep track of everyone, where everyone fit together, who was sleeping with who, who used to be sleeping with who, and consequently you never really got a good idea of who these people really were. There were just too many of them.
My second big problem was that there was no conflict. Nothing happens. Nada. ***Spoilers*** there is tension between Nik and Aaron for about 30 pages and then...they're together...and nothing else happens. Well aside from the incredibly boring description of all the wedding preparations, which I'm sure is exciting if you're there in person, but isn't so fun to read.
I don't think I'll look for anything by this author again. This wasn't really to my taste, and although I don't usually comment on price, $8 was a very steep price for this one.
