John Wakeley is Professor and Chairman of Biology at Harvard University. He has worked extensively in coalescent theory. His research has focussed on populations structured by geography and limited migration. Any one interested in population genetics and molecular evolution should... Or well MUST read this book. Classical population genetics is fine, but Coalescent Theory is taken over the place as a standard tool and theory for almost every element for microevolutionary dynamics. From population delimitation to species inference and species delineation, coalescent methods are being used and new methods are based on it. So, it's better to start learning it right away!

Excellent introduction to coalescent theory

I'm puzzled by a previous reviewer who complained about a lack of precise definitions and notation. I'm a professional mathematician and I think its a very clear text. It may be true that there are not a lot of rigorous proofs, but that is an asset in an introductory text. Wakeley includes many references to more technical treatments if these are desired.

Overall the writing is excellent, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in population genetics.

Excellent Introduction

This is an excellent introduction to Coalescent Theory. Even though it covers some of the basic mathematics, one with a good foundation in standard population genetics and statistics/mathematics would definitely get more out of this book.

Extremely accurate summary of each enneagram type.

I am extremely impressed by the accuracy with which this book describes the nine enneagram types. I have been a student of the enneagram for 15 years, and of all the books I have read, this is by far the best in summarizing the essence of each type. It is also very easy to read, and the material is presented with a gentle humor. Through the authors' eyes, we can see our gifts and foibles clearly, with compassion, and with an appreciation of the cosmic humor inherent in the human condition.

Lighthearted but Informative Introduction to the Enneagram!

Baron & Wagele's "The Enneagram Made Easy" is-- for my money-- one of the best introductory level books available for someone who's just beginning to study the Enneagram, or who just wants some "bare bones" coverage to satisfy their curiosity about this ancient personality typing system. Although I have studied the Enneagram for many years, I often refer to this book when trying to illustrate basic concepts to someone who has expressed an interest.
The authors have put together a light hearted and highly readable book about the basics of the Enneagram. Each of the nine "types" has its own standardized chapter, which includes a "personality inventory" checklist to help readers determine their type; then coverage of the ups and downs of that type; relationships, relating, typical thoughts, childhood, parenting, careers and free time. The chapters also include brief coverage of "wings," as well as a section of "practical suggestions and exercises" (for making life easier) for each type.
The final 20 or so pages of the book covers the interaction and overlaps between the Enneagram types and Jungian psychological types, specifically making comparisons with the popular Myers-Briggs typology system.
The book is illustrated throughout with Elizabeth Wagele's generally funny-- often poignant, sometimes silly cartoon drawings.
Do keep in mind, however, that this book presents a VERY superficial and simplistic outline of a profoundly complex and thorough psychological "personality mapping" and philosophical system. If you are seriously interested in studying and understanding the complexities of the Enneagram, I highly recommend that you also invest in one of Riso/Hudson's or Helen Palmer's more thorough books.
Final thoughts: Excellent (9.5 bookmarks out of a possible 10); keeping in mind that this is an introductory text and by no means a "thorough" work on the Enneagram. A quick and easy read, and well worth it!

A bit too easy

"The Enneagram Made is Easy" is making an honest attempt at breaking down a rather complex system to give the uninitiated a brief understanding of the Enneagram. The problem with that is that it makes the Enneagram look trivial and the value of the system is completely lost. Instead of showing what a beautiful mirror and map to the complexity human soul this system is, "The Enneagram Made Easy" helps reinforce stereotypes of the types and probably will turn people away from exploring the Enneagram deeper. I think that Riso and Hudson's "The Wisdom of The Enneagram" is a much better introduction to the system. It is also much better written than this book.

I am an avid reader of fantasy, I love how this book keeps me on my toes. The classic adventure set up is familiar, but still lends well to the overall story and assists in moving the plot along. I tend to love anything that can make me laugh, and this book had me giggling and feeling for the characters as they dealt with their trials. Great read!!

i had lost my copy and repurchased it to re-read it along with jones's later short story book: all aunt hagar's children. the 12 stories in each are linked (1-1, 2-2) in a unique conceptual manner. together the books create a fascinating picture of the 50 year 'great migration' (1915-65) wherein american cities -- and american culture -- were completely transformed by the movement of african americans from the south to the north. these two books and jones's sole novel (the known world) are all required reading for anyone interested in american slave history. or in contemporary american literature.

Really good writer - and Pulitzer agreed with the coveted prize for his next work, The Known World. These stories give us an inside look at life in Washington, DC, in the 1950's and 60's black neighborhoods. Some very poignant stories with totally believable characters.

An excellent revisionist perspective

This is incredibly important book reveals some of the behind-the-scenes thought processes that lead to Truman's decisions to use nuclear weapons on Japan. It's replete with supporting evidence, including quotes from the key players in the US, UK, USSR and Japan (taken from their diaries, memoirs, official records, diplomatic communications, intercepted comms, etc), and tries hard to be balanced and cautious with leaping to conclusions. The final assessment is that the opinion of nearly every single senior military and political leader in the US and UK before August 1945 was that Japan was utterly defeated and willing to surrender - especially once the USSR entered the war with them. Why drop the bombs if it wasn't necessary to end the war? It seems to have a lot to do with using the last opportunity to use them in war time (billions had been spent on developing them), and in sending a warning signal to Stalin.
