A Vast Reservoir of Financial Knowledge And Life Lessons

The author assembles the financial histories of very successful individuals like Kevin O"Leary and Tony Robbins, so that the reader can learn from their hard won financial lessons about the practical applications of creating and maintaining wealth. Using these financial role models and their examples, the author reveals how prosperity is available to anyone willing to stop resenting those who have achieved their dreams and instead learn by example and transform themselves and their financial world. The book is a vast reservoir of knowledge that the reader will want to revisit often.

I really enjoyed this new book

I really enjoyed this new book. I think of myself as a financial grownup already, but I was curious anyway. To my surprise, I learned a bunch of new tips and tricks to save money. That said, the best part of this book is that is isn't boring. This is a super entertaining book. Its an easy read because it is full of short stories from famous and fascinating business leaders.

James (Jim) Dudley has been involved in spirituality activities and their role in social work practice for many years. Besides teaching numerous Spirituality and Social Work courses at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, he has also conducted research and published on the topic, as well as led several retreats and workshops. He has a Master’s Degree in Spirituality Studies and has completed training in spiritual direction. He also has an MSW Degree and Ph.D. in Social Work and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in North Carolina.

There is an abundance of new books, on one hand (the hand of cultural criticism), Michael Kimmelman's The Accidental Masterpiece: On the Art of Life and Vice Versa, John Updike's Still Looking: Essays on American Art; on the other hand (the hand of pure pop culture) an insurgence of immensely successful novels based as much on art as on life: Girl with a Pearl Earring, Jonathan Harr's The Lost Painting, last but not least, The Da Vinci Code. And then there are plenty of examples of pop cultural criticism, such as Hal Niedzvieki's Hello, I'm Special: How Individuality Became the New Conformity, along with countless books and products on the market designed to help everyone from businessmen to babies to bus drivers embrace their own creative genius.

Magical Secrets, which is at once a book, a DVD, and a website ([...] is one of the smartest of these forays into exploring creativity. The book is formulaic without being predictable: Author Kathan Brown has organized it into thirteen chapters, one for each "magical secret," (my favorites are chapters five and six, "Don't Know What You Want" and "Know What You Don't Want," a very Zen-like juxtaposition). Magical Secrets manages to pack a lot in, from stories about artists to musings on the creative thought process. Yet Brown spends no more than a handful of pages on any one Secret, and addresses her reader clearly and concisely, not as an entertainer or an academic but as a confidant, pupil and friend. She guides her audience confidently on a path that leads inward, but still somehow ends up outside the self.

It is a feat in itself simply that Magical Secrets conveys a lot of information. Etching, one finds, is a centuries-old technique of incising an image into metal with acid. The artist begins by covering the surface of a copper plate with a hard, waxy ground. He cuts the image he wants into the ground with an etching needle or other sharp tool, then submerges the plate in acid. The acid bites into the grooves and crevices, the waxy ground is rubbed off, and the image is left engrained in the smooth surface of the plate. The resulting incisions are filled with ink, a piece of paper is placed on the plate, and the whole thing is run through the printing press. Scraping and burnishing the copper, rubbing the ink into the grooves, and pulling the plate through the press are highly physical, labor-intensive processes that involve a lot of painstaking, detailed work, yet the resulting lines an artist can get are often the most delicate you've ever seen, and the textures the most subtle. Though etching is appreciated by many art lovers, the number of master etchers in the United States might be comparable to the number of virtuoso organists or rare orchid cultivators. It is not the first thing most people think of when faced with something as huge as Life.

But etching has been Kathan Brown's life. Despite the beauty of etching, it was not taken seriously in the United States contemporary art market until Brown made it her mission to revive it. Since Crown Point Press's inception in 1962, artists from all over the world who work in different mediums--from San Francisco conceptual sculptor Tom Marioni to New York composer John Cage; from Australian Aboriginal artist Dorothy Napangardi to Pakistani-born miniature painter Shahzia Sikander--have been drawn there for a unique experience in art making. Magical Secrets about Thinking Creatively marks the forty-fourth year in Brown's highly energetic and passionate career.

The variety of art represented at Crown Point speaks to the depth of Brown's understanding of it; while her technique is narrow, her scope is broad, and that is what makes Magical Secrets a compelling read. Brown offers a broad understanding of the etching process, and ultimately steps back to examine creativity itself. "Many artists have told me that after working with etching they have a new awareness of what they are doing in their painting or sculpture," she writes in the preface. "You can share their awareness through this book, which is for artists and people who have - or would like to have - the spirit of an artist." Indeed, Brown's style makes it difficult not to share this awareness: like good art, her writing makes her subject seem both obvious and somehow profound.

Narrow and superficial

It may not be fair to critique a book that is not what I expected to be. Perhaps the better course may be to critique the presentation. The attempt is both narrow and superficial. The topics of creativity are just that, topics, without delving into what they mean and the explanations about the art of etching are also superficial. If one read the glossary in the back of the book you would pick up what information was available in the body of the book. I would not take the time to read this book if your are looking for etching information or exploring the topic of creativity.

If you are looking for a detailed,technical manual on etching this book might not be the right choice even though the process is explained very well.

If you want to understand the principles of creativity in art,but not only in art, this is a great source no matter whether you be an artist and art lover or not.

Kathan Brown the founder of Crown Point Press,San Francisco explains 13 secrets that artist use to come to superior results in their field. These secrets are patterns of behaviour or strategies that she observed over decades working with such outstanding artists like Richard Diebenkorn,Wayne Thiebaud,Kiki Smith and others. Kathan Brown publishes the essence of her very long experience with numerous artist that worked at her studio. Each secret is featured in one chapter and each chapter is dedicated to one artist.

"Magical secrets" is an extraordinary book that has a singular position in the literature on art and creativity, because it is routed in lived experience with artists. I don't know of any other publication that offers such clear,precise and complete insight into the principles of creative work. Instead of lengthy,difficult theories Kathan Brown explains straight and in an entertaining way what are the driving forces behind artists actions.

Together with the book there comes a CD-rom with videos, a lecture by Kathan Brown and interesting interviews with the artists featured. The book is printed in excellent quality with numerous colored reproductions of artist works,rare photographs taken of artists in her studio and others.

The Amazing and worthwhile Leap

I have to admit to a fear of leaping from heights, which makes Mr Shindler's metaphor of a trapeze artist at the beginning of his excellent book so challenging for me. But that is the point, many of us find it challenging or seemingly impossible to make that leap, leaving us to be consigned to mediocrity and compromise.

As someone who likes to think of careers in Chaotic terms, the critical commentary around simplistic goal setting and the reference to David Clutterbuck's work are commendable.

As I read through I came to appreciate just how many good ideas are crammed into this valuable resource from attitude to presentation, learning to listening, from MARIA to PESTLE (clever acronyms that illustrate how to convey attitude and business experience). It is all seasoned with pithy quotes from Einstein, Victor Frankl, Leonardo DaVinci, Wittgenstein to the intellectual might of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and Marks and Spencers!!

This is a useful book for anyone wanting to make a leap in their career. Highly recommended!

My wife and I experienced a lot of "high strangeness" five years ago in 2006 after I had an affair with a woman involved in occult practices.  Our marriage and home experienced many spiritual manifestations  because of the hexes and curses placed on us after I ended the relationship.  Our experience was very unique.  It took over five-years to sort many things out, and this book is the product of hindsight and grace.  The books relating to spiritual warfare are many, but few focus on the marriage relationship.  Our story and lessons teach the reader to become a warrior and a fighter for their marriage.  

About the Author
Linda earned degrees in Mathematics, Science and Behavioral Science. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Loma Linda University in California. She has over 25-years in administrative employment with both federal and local governments. Her passion for intercessory prayer and Biblical hermeneutics has enhanced her interest in spiritual warfare. She is the co-author of “Demons in My Marriage Bed: A True Story of Spiritual Warfare,” "Eyes to See Unseen Enemies," "Idol'-i-cide: The Killing of Idols," and "Christianity of Blasphemy: A New Gnostic Lie." Paul earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biblical Studies and Systematic Theology from Southeastern University in Florida. He received a Master of Arts degree in Negotiation and Conflict Management from California State University Dominguez Hills. He has over 25-years in law enforcement and obtained to the rank of Police Lieutenant. How to save a marriage? Read Here!

This book is about the true story of good verses evil, light verses darkness. It is the story of two people who made a complete mess of their marriage. Tried to fix it and failed and then tried the only way it could possibly be saved. No amount of therapy or friends advice would have made something good of what they had ruined. So many marriages and relationships ( between friends and family) are on the rocks today. So many divorces. And people just remarry and divorce again! This is because they don't know what this couple finally realized. Everyone should read this book! Whether you are married or not. It will save you a ton of sorrow if you take its advice and follow it. This family was oppressed by demons and people who wanted to destroy their relationship and their lives. The couple made wrong choices. Then they tried to leave behind their occult hobbies and interests. But it didn't want to be left behind! The demons hung onto them tightly, and tried to infiltrate even their sleep and inner thoughts while they hammered at them physically. They stumbled and fell, got back up and stumbled and fell again. In the book, they did not keep their pride intact but laid out all their behaviors and failings for the reader. Because of that very honest human viewpoint and lack of privacy, they have given us a front row seat to the turmoil in this marriage while it was being ravaged by demonic entities, witches and the couple's own titillation with the occult and the very real experiences of terror that it brings, until finding their footing in the only way they could have survived. Throughout all the stumbling and falling the devil was hard at work doing what he does: stealing, killing, and destroying. They had experiences that would make you want to sleep with the lights on for the rest of your days. In the end, they triumph and we celebrate the joy that comes from true freedom from the bondage of darkness. Thru this victory they became as a couple more than the sum of their parts, experienced total forgiveness and found a new reason to live.
This book should be read by everyone because it has the information necessary to heal any broken relationship, any broken heart and restore the reader to wholeness if the advice is taken and followed.

God is All-Powerful!

An amazing testimony of God's faithfulness and grace! God takes the Marraige Covenant quite seriously--and this true account shows God's amazing redemptive work and deliverance over evil in the lives and marraige of Paul & Linda. It is co-written by husband & wife, each telling about the real experiences they each battled.
Paul begins by telling about his attraction to, and his involvment with, different occultic practices to gain power and control in his life. In being blinded from the truth and in the control of satan, Paul, while out on a business trip was led into an affair with a woman who was involved in witchcraft. In this rebellion and sin against God the enemy gained a major foothold, trapping Paul and Linda both in a power struggle against evil. His marraige and family both were taken through a confrontation with evil, encountering and combatting dark forces in their very own homes. In the book, he and Linda also write about spiritual warfare and give teaching about the marraige covenant and how it is seen in the eyes of God. All victory comes from prayer, the blood of Jesus Christ, and in standing on God's Word which IS TRUTH. Two negatives: #1-there are some minor grammatical errors which can easily be fixed. #2- I would have picked a more serious book cover. But like they say, "You can't judge a book by it's cover" and this is certainly true for this one! I still give it 5 stars.

This book was amazing! I've been listening to the authors on the KAPOW Radio Network podcast, which is where I heard them talk about their book, so I decided to check it out. I'm so glad I got this book! I've had a few experiences myself with demons & have a few other spiritual warfare books, but none of them grabbed & held my attention like this one did. Their story is terrifying, which is what makes the book so interesting, but it also gives straight forward, Bible based advice on how to battle with Satan, his demons, etc. I'm going to read this book again, actually!

It is an excellent book to start with when studying clinical anatomy of the eye. I forgot most of the anatomy by the time I left med school. Snell's anatomy book gave me a concise but useful overview of the anatomy of the eye and have very useful clinical correlations at the end of each chapter and I found those were the best parts of the book.

We bought this for my wife's class as a required reading. I don't have any clue why it would be required. It's got an interesting story behind it, but the financial info is clearly out of date. There have been a lot of changes since this book was published that make every other point archaic. It must have been great 10-15 years ago, but not for me.

I have read the original book in my 20s and recently came across it again so I ordered it and I'm trying to apply these easy concepts to my life I hope I'm as successful. Good read easy for anyone to understand.

Sound financial advice - Americanized

I agree with the other reviewers that this is an
excellent book to teach financial planning to novices.
The in-depth situational analysis on saving, insurance,
retirement planning, etc. will prove a solid foundation
for people looking for a place to start building their
net worth, and looking for something that doesn't require
them to already have several tens of thousands before they
can start.
One caveat, though, for readers (like myself) who read
the original, CANADIAN, version ... this one available
at ... has been rewritten with the US market in mind.
The story is now set in Port Huron instead of Sarnia (no
big deal), and the retirement planning section focuses
on IRAs and 401(K)s instead of RRSPs and SDRSPs - a major
difference if you were expecting current Canadian advice!
I bought this book expecting to have an update on current
Canadian treatment of RRSPs and their allowable foreign
content, the phasing out of the old [$$$] lifetime
capital gain exemption, etc., and was rudely surprised
at the all-American content. So, be warned.
The book is still an excellent read, and for anyone living
and/or working in the US, it's probably a must-read.
I'm not sure where the Canadian version of this book
is available, or even whether it _is_ any longer being
kept current in a Canadian version, but if you're looking
for that, try a Canadian bookstore. :)
