Great writer, but this book is not her best

I love Simone de Beauvoir and have read The Second Sex as well as The Mandarins and She Came to Stay. She is a great writer. Here though she goes into the minutiae of her childhood memories. For women who have been stifled and formed by a domineering mother, and who finally rebelled, this book will resonate as it did for me. But every episode of her childhood is so long winded that it was hard for me to keep interested.

The Cultivation of an Intellectual

"Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter" is an exhaustive look at early life of Simone de Beauvoir. The autobiography explains four stages in the development of her life from age 0-20. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the life of Simone de Beauvoir or for an account of bourgeois upbringing in the early 20th century.

I do have some complaints. First, the first half of the book is exceptionally exhaustive. She gives detailed descriptions of things that could have easily been summarized. Second, I was expecting this book to elaborate on Beauvoir's early relationship with Sartre. Roughly ten pages are dedicated to Sartre. While her description of Sartre is effusive, it's very short!

Third, her memoirs give only a starting point for her intellectual curiosity. I guess I'll have to read "The Prime of Life" :)

The Greatness of simone de Beauvoir

Simone de Beauvoir's Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter, which was published in 1958,
not only is a great insight into Parisian and French life at the turn of the 20th
Century, but shows the growth of a great writer. Her seminal work, The Second Sex,
which was published in 1948, made her a star--a writer ticked off about how women
had been treated in society. From that book onward, her insights and philosophy, along
with Sartre and other intellectuals, made the world sit up and take notice.
De Beauvoir, in Dutiful Daughter, shows you a single-minded young girl who suddenly
becomes a beautiful woman with a lot on her mind. One of the great thinkers,
along with Hanna Arendt, of our time.

Hilarious and fun

I can't say enough about this book and particularly the author. I read about her and her books in a magazine and picked up this title. I literally laughed OUT LOUD every few pages. Ms. Quinn is so witty; I just LOVE her sense of humor. This is the first time I've tried reading humor and so light a theme. The author has to be such a fun woman...I would love to meet her. To me, it' not really about Audrey Hepburn or fashion, etc. It's just pure fictional FUN. I am now almost through The Ivy Chronicles and anxious to dig in to Wife in the Fast Lane waiting on my shelf! I am in my 50's so it doesn't matter if you can relate to her young mother type characters or not. All you need is an appreciation for a witty sense of humor and a zany romp. Her books are a great stress reliever and I only hope she is working on the next. I am a BIG fan, Karen!

From start to finish this story draws in the reader with well-developed, eccentric and entertaining characters and a plot line that will keep you guessing and flipping the pages, anxious to follow the heroine through foibles that will remind you of the best of Audrey Hepburn movies with an entirely new twist. A glorious, romantic romp of a tale. Great for a beach read or BFF gift!

Great for beginners

This is an awesome piece of work. I haven't finished reading it yet. These 763 pages cover ONLY chosen 100 hymes out of 1028! It has Sanskrit printing as well as sanskrit-in-english-alphabets along with meaning in English. It is not just a translation, it has about 60pages long introduction to warm you up with the concepts, myths and history in a nutshell.

I'm so glad to read the oldest script in the human history, estimating to be over 10000 (ten thousand) years old. I know, a million thanks to late Sham Ghosh is too less.

A brilliant translation - at last!

RGVEDA for the Layman
Translated with Commentary by Shyam Ghosh

This fresh translation of the RIG Veda was published in 2002. The translator sadly died in the year 2000 or I would have sent him my personal THANK YOU and touched his feet (a sweet Hindu custom of respect).

For years now, there has been only one translation of the Rig Veda available to most of us who do not read Sanskrit. Although I remain grateful for any translation, over the years as I came to understand more and more of the metaphysics of Hinduism, it occurred to me that perhaps the translator simply did not quite fully understand the subtle metaphysical depths of the text and that a great deal of the inner meaning must have been lost through a lack of spiritual knowledge.

For many years now most westerners have been completely bewildered by the Rig Veda - because most translations make the Rig Veda seem like a bunch of meaningless hymns propitiating deities.

I knew this could NOT be true.

For one thing, the Upanishads and the Puranic texts are all based on the Vedas (there are four Vedas; the fifth being the Mahabharata). So the question remained how did such sublime enlightening metaphysical systems emerge of out of seemingly meaningless ritualistic hymns?

I decided on my own that the Vedas had to be some kind of encoded text that explained the nature of the universe, both visible and invisible. But I still had no evidence beyond my intuition. A recent book entitled, `Vedic Physics' by Dr. Raja Ram Mohan Roy, shed some light on the inscrutable Vedas by posing analogies to the principles of quantum physics.

So --- you can imagine how excited and thrilled I am at holding this new translation, which offers a plethora of insight into the possible real meaning of the RIG Veda.

For example: the MARUTS are traditionally held to be immortal beings who `are a restless, warlike troupe of flashy young men...a society of war-minded men with esoteric practices and formula' - they are the sons of Rudra and the friends of Indra - `riding on the whirl wind, they direct the storm and move with great noise, singing.'

The Shayam Ghose translation of the RIG Veda defines the MARUTS as -

SILENT PARTICLES OF SOUND !

`The...Rishi [Seer]...expounds the attributes of MARUT, the silent particle of sound. He traces the origin of Maruts to Rudra [the god who later became Shiva], the highly concentrate sound that first burst out of the primordial atom... the Rishi [Seer] affirms the existence of such electromagnetic sound particles in space. It is these particles [ether] which, when obstructed by material objects, rattle those and produce vibrations analogous to consciousness.'

Is this not an awesome insight? The Vedic texts have the power to unite human consciousness and modern science to their harmonius timeless traditional relationship with the Cosmos.

Here is another sublime example of a translation from Mr. Shyam Ghose of a very famous RIG Veda hymn, the Gayatri Mantra:

`That eternal flux of Vast Intelligence, which comes as a distributed radiance of light, is indeed worthy of adoration.
May that ever impel our own thinking forward.'

Lives up to it's title!!!

Holland sets out to magnify Jesus so that He receives our "absolute, complete, exclusive, comprehensive attention and focus in our life . . . Worship this Jesus. Don't let Jesus be crowded out" (9).

Holland accomplishes his goal. He magnifies Jesus with clarity and conciseness. Each chapter unfolds rich theology in a compact way. Holland is masterful at relating to the audience and teaching the reader how each subject is relative and important to life. His gift is taking complex issues and making them seem simple yet leaving the reader to say, "Hallelujah, what a Savior."

This book is GREAT for any person. The unbeliever will be confronted with the glory of Christ. The new believer will understand foundational truths. The mature believer will be reminded of the glories of Christ and find his/her time as worshipful!

I recommend each person own a handful of these books. One for you and some to give away. This book would be ideal in counseling situations too!

Hebrews 12:1-2 says, Let us lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, FIXING OUR EYES ON JESUS, the author and perfecter of faith, . . . This book will help!!

A Must Read

Pastor Rick Holland calls us back to the main thing. Without Christ alone in focus, we will be helpless to live the Christian life and will miss the point of the gospel. A must read for all who seek to be faithfulness disciples of Christ and who are tired of wandering around through the shadowy half-light of an eclipsed life.

Helpful in Recovering Your Enjoyment of Your Life in Christ

"If there's anything in your faith that isn't anchored in the person of Jesus, you're living in an eclipse. You are not enjoying the eternal life made available by the gospel." (p. 41). That sums up the big idea behind Rick Holland's new book, Uneclipsing the Son. In this book, Holland aims to put an end to a complacent, half-hearted Christian walk by bringing us face-to-face with the glorious Jesus we see in Scripture.

Holland's concise prose packs a powerful punch as he again and again directs us to the truth that Jesus is the answer and cure for our complacency. And to be sure, there is much in our world that causes us to be complacent in our faith (not the least of which being the remnants of our indwelling sin). And it's not just the distractions of the cares of this world--sometimes it's things that bring great value to others, yet we've lost sight of the "why." And I think that's the thing I most appreciate about this book. As he takes readers through the amazingness of God's love for us, for His grace in providing a Mediator in Jesus Christ, in His revealing Himself through His Word and in so many other ways, Holland really wants us to get the "why" of the Christian life.

The point of the Christian life is Jesus. All we do and all we are is for His glory alone. He is the thing we're to be about. He is to be the One we can't stop talking about, thinking about, desiring to see made great. Holland describes this longing well in the following passage:

"Love also longs to understand Christ, to "know Him." Love craves knowledge of its Beloved. It is impossible to overstate how important the knowledge of Christ is to loving HIm. The less we know about Him, the less air flows into the lungs of our souls. The more we inform our minds with the truth about Jesus, the more captivated we become with wonder of the God-man Knowledge of the Savior provides an authentic, rational encounter with divine majesty." (pp. 64-65)

Do we have that kind of longing? Is our wonder at the person and work of Christ being "eclipsed"?

As I've re-read parts of this book while preparing this review, I've been confronted with a tendency to become distracted from marvelling at Jesus. It's easy to have happen. A busy job, a growing family, a number of ministry commitments... none of these are bad things. In fact, they're all very good things. But in trying to juggle all the demands, I often find myself losing sight of the main thing, and that just won't do. I think that's why I really appreciate the book's nine chapter, "The Lost Supper." Here Holland reminds readers why communion matters--not merely because of the event itself, but because of the opportunity it provides to reorient our hearts.

"How do you uneclipse Jesus? You hold precious His death and remember His greatness. How do you hold that He is precious? By examining your life and seeing your sinfulness and loving His sacrifice on the cross on your behalf. Where does that come into focus most clearly? During the Lord's Supper. How does Communion function in your life? It functions as a catalyst, as a checkpoint, bu also as a pattern of living. Remember Jesus; examine yourself; repeat. As you do this, you'll find fresh reminders that He's alive and He's going to come back." (pp. 119-120)

This is a wonderful reminder and one that I needed (and still need) to read. Reading a book like this, it's easy to become discouraged--to become so burdened by the realities of how we may be "eclipsing" Jesus in our lives that we could risk falling into despair. And perhaps if written by someone else, it may have become that. But Uneclipsing the Son is anything but discouraging. It's a deeply moving, compelling and captivating read. Do not rush through this book, as tempting as it may be. Read it carefully, thoughtfully and prayerfully, and see how it might help you to recover your enjoyment of your life in Christ.
