The Education Enigma: What Happened To American Education, by Bruce Deitrick Price

The USA is reported to have 50 million functional illiterates. How could this possibly happen? SAT scores continue to decline, despite ever more massive spending. How can this be? To study American education is to be confronted by what Bruce Price calls “the education enigma.” He has written more than 250 articles trying to explain the mysteries of an educational system that never seems truly committed to education. Here he has assembled the best parts from all these essays to create a unique and lively collection of short pieces. Price writes clearly and decisively. He explains history, ideology, dogma and deception. He makes many recommendations for how we can improve in the future. Bruce Price--author, artist, education activist--is your ideal guide to the dark side of American education. The web address of each article is provided so that readers can find the original piece. UPDATE JUNE, 2015: the price was just reduced to $8.75. The book is several years old. Some of the web addresses are not active. And a new collection might be published next year. However, this book remains an excellent introduction to the problems in K-12. Please order it and pass it around to as many people as possible. When a book is short like this, people tend to read the whole thing quickly. A few months ago an education reformer in Canada sent an email saying that she had bought the book years ago and thought it was "brilliant."

Giving Public Scholls a Failing Grade
By Cynthia Clarke
As the founder of Improve[...], Mr.Deitrick Price has dedicated himself to researching the failures of the public school system in America. In this book he includes 50 short essays that attempt to explain why it is that education in the USA remains ineffective, despite massive spending.

Tracing back the failure to the late 1800's, the author is able to make a firm case for where America went wrong. With chapter titles like "Dumbing Down and the Scandal of Dyslexia", "Maria Montessori vs. John Dewey (The Fight of the Century)" and "Form, Function and Foolishness", Mr. Deitrick Price takes the reader on a fascinating journey of secret agendas and failed experiments. But the essays, largely taken from his internet articles, are written in a comfortable, conversational tone that makes the difficulty of the subject easier to take in.

As a novelist, painter, poet and education activist, the author is an interesting man indeed. Although the book is an intense one, home-schooling parents in particular will find a quirky solace in its pages. We know inside ourselves that there is something so intrinsically wrong about public schools that we have been willing to dedicate our very lives to helping our children excel outside the system. This well researched book comes along side to provide the evidence for our instincts.

Review
Bruce D. Price, author of The Education Enigma, was born in Norfolk, Virginia, but now resides in Manhattan. (2009, p.136) He was educated at Norfolk Academy, spent two years in the Army, and later graduated with honors in English Literature from Princeton University. Mr. Price has penned five books of various genres and also fancies himself an artist. More information can be found about Bruce Deitrick Price on his personal web site [...] or at [...]

This book is a compilation of essays that Mr. Price has authored for his web site (see above). In the first few pages he speaks about how he became an education activist and what his aspirations are in this endeavor. Over the duration of this book Mr. Price laments how woefully and totally inadequate America's public educational system is. He sees this problem ("dumbing up") as growing in magnitude over the past hundred years. He attempts to pinpoint who or what entity he believes is at fault and offers suggestions for how to overcome this dire situation.

Throughout this book Bruce Price views our youth into adult population as largely functionally illiterate and pins this plight squarely on the liberal "progressive" Ph.D's who administer such programs in our educational system. He contends to trace this unsettling and planned dilemma back to President Dewey where he says that "...Dewey was eager to dilute content and diminish learning." (2009, p.38) "John Dewey and his gang were all too willing to settle for mediocrity. They were socialists...too much learning and knowledge got in the way of producing the cooperative, interdependent children they wanted." (p.39)

Mr. Price states that "...educators....deepest desires seem focused on control and coercion." (2009, p.31) And that the focus of this control is to "....create a New American Child--more uniform, more pliable, with fewer academic skills, and a reduced ability to think independently." (p.35) According to Price teaching methods that have been recently introduced with regard to reading (i.e., "Whole word or sight reading") have been the culprits of this debacle. These relatively new, but not particularly innovative, practices have born the crux of Mr. Prices' anger or disdain toward the educational establishment as a whole. He (Bruce Price) believes that [paraphrase] by implementing these new techniques children are no longer taught to read phonetically and therefore are unable to read even simple literature. He (Price) calls this the "war against reading or intellectual child abuse" and attributes dyslexia and other disorders with this one technique gone awry. (2009, p.69-76 and 84)

Bruce Price believes "the goal of education has always been to achieve critical thinking....and constructing new knowledge." (2009, p.91, 98) He does not think children (nor many Ph.D's, p.103) today can read, write, or speak well enough to be pressed through our public school systems let alone move on toward and through college. This planned sabotage of our educational system he (Price) suggests is "...leveling that results when everyone is semi-illiterate."

Bruce Price arrogantly calls down the Ph.D's as being "nouveau intellectuals" and states that they use such educational trappings [paraphrase-largely hollow extensive graduate/post-graduate degrees and certifications] to improve their rank within society and little more. (2009, p.105) "These liberals want to tell us how to think, but cannot even write English." "Today's liberal educators have drifted across to the dark side. They aid and abet education policies that actually lead to limited education and less universal literacy." He makes a distinction between educators (the cause of this illiteracy problem) and teachers (the culprits in this plan). (p.123) He says that "...the people at the top are grossly incompetent or actually subversive." (p.124) As to the former quote from Mr. Price I do take exception as I am a doctoral student and quite concerned with education overall and achieving my personal best.

Mr. Price concludes by deriding the newspapers (propagandists) and poet's inability to write clearly or correctly. (2009, p.115-120) He does offer suggestions for improvement in educating beginning with children in the first grade "...learning the basics in each subject". ( p.92) Mr. Price believes that by adding to those things taught in the beginning and building on them from year to year until the children have a complete understanding and are encouraged to "...analyze, to compare, and contrast" our educational facilities would create a more literate and independent thinking person as the end result. Toward this end I wholly agree.

The Education Enigma: What Happened To American Education
By G. W. Kinison
I purchased a copy of "The Education Enigma: What Happened To American Education"(Paperback) by Bruce Price on March 29th. I have found the book to be most interesting and informative. As a retired engineer, I have always been baffled at the consistently poor education being provided by the public schools. Now I understand why. I recommend this book to anyone who also has had questions. It is well written, entertaining, and short enough to be read casually on a business trip, or before retiring for the night. My youngest son who is currently a sophomore in college also read through the book and really liked it. I hope Mr. Price writes more books on American education in the future. GWK

Excellent book to learn SQL and RDBMS concepts
By A Customer
I was not interested in learning just SQL per se, I also wanted to get some RDBMS experience. This is what had drawn my attention to SQL Bible: it concentrates on three major RDBMS packages (with all due respect, I can't imagine making decent living with Open Source databases like MySQL : ) ), makes comparisons, explains THEIR implementations - just what I needed (do not believe anyone who tells you that ANSI SQL is all you need to know to work in the field!) I installed DB2 Personal Edition (included with the book), and the installation was a snap! All I had to do was to follow very detailed and clear instructions in Appendix D; again, following instructions I have created a database and installed all authors scripts. The scripts were in the place where the book says they should, and I have not encountered a single problem running them... I was pleasantly surprised because this is where the most books fail: missing files, confusing "best-case-scenario" instructions... Not here! It's a shame that Oracle 9i installation was not included; I had to download it separately following instructions in the book (p.638.) Oracle 9i takes over 1.5 GB of space - 3 (!) CDs. It took me awhile, even with my cable connection speed... The only glitch I found so far was that the CD claims to contain MS SQL Server, but has DB2 8.1 for Windows instead (just as it says on the book's back cover.)

Top SQL99 reference for DB2 8.1, Oracle9i, MS SQL 2000
By Suresh Chanmugam
The best reference for the SQL99 standard. Each SQL command is provided first by syntax followed by its variations for DB2 8.1, Oracle 9i and SQL server 2000 making the book a ONE STOP SHOP. An example in code form is included for the command being referred to. Whenever there is a custom feature of a command for a given RDBMS (say Oracle 9i) that does not exist in another (say SQL server 2000) the author will try to show you a work around in obtaining that unavailable feature if possible. The CD Rom included with the book comes with DB2 V8.1 (personal edition for windows) and most importunately the PDF version of the book as well. Thoughtfully organized into basic concepts, DDL, DML, Transactions and more. Good for Intermediate plus or a smart Junior programmer.

Proving History: Bayes's Theorem and the Quest for the Historical Jesus, by Richard Carrier

This in-depth discussion of New Testament scholarship and the challenges of history as a whole proposes Bayes’s Theorem, which deals with probabilities under conditions of uncertainty, as a solution to the problem of establishing reliable historical criteria. The author demonstrates that valid historical methods—not only in the study of Christian origins but in any historical study—can be described by, and reduced to, the logic of Bayes’s Theorem. Conversely, he argues that any method that cannot be reduced to this theorem is invalid and should be abandoned.

Writing with thoroughness and clarity, the author explains Bayes’s Theorem in terms that are easily understandable to professional historians and laypeople alike, employing nothing more than well-known primary school math. He then explores precisely how the theorem can be applied to history and addresses numerous challenges to and criticisms of its use in testing or justifying the conclusions that historians make about the important persons and events of the past. The traditional and established methods of historians are analyzed using the theorem, as well as all the major "historicity criteria" employed in the latest quest to establish the historicity of Jesus. The author demonstrates not only the deficiencies of these approaches but also ways to rehabilitate them using Bayes’s Theorem.

Anyone with an interest in historical methods, how historical knowledge can be justified, new applications of Bayes’s Theorem, or the study of the historical Jesus will find this book to be essential reading.

Review
"[C]arefully exposes what happens when sound methodology meets biblical studies. . . . Proving History is a brilliant lesson in the proper proportioning of belief to evidence. Even minimal attention to Bayesian probability theory reveals just how much of Jesus scholarship confuses ‘possibly true’ with ‘probably true.’ The only miracle Richard Carrier has left to explain is why so few appreciate that extraordinary claims require extraordinary support."
-Dr. Malcolm Murray, Author of The Atheist’s Primer

"Carrier applies his philosophical and historical training to maximum effect in outlining a case for the use of Bayes’s Theorem in evaluating biblical claims. Even biblical scholars, who usually are not mathematically inclined, may never look at the ‘historical Jesus’ the same way again."
-Dr. Hector Avalos, Professor of religious studies, Iowa State University, and author of , The End of Biblical Studies

Brilliant Book but Not For Everyone
By Book Fanatic
This is an amazing book by Richard Carrier. It is important to note that this book is not a book on whether or not Jesus was a historical person. Dr. Carrier is writing a second book to follow up this one called "On the Historicity of Jesus Christ" that will address that question. He does touch on the subject somewhat in this book, but the purpose of this book is to lay the theoretical groundwork for the next volume.

The present volume argues, and argues quite persuasively that historians should employ Bayes's Theorem in their work and of course that includes work on the historical Jesus. Regardless of what you think about that subject, if you are a thinking person, I think you should read this book. If you care about how we know what we know and how likely your beliefs are to be correct you should read this book. In that regard it is excellent. It does have a fairly narrow focus but that focus is on something that has incredibly wide application.

I'm just a lay person interested in science, history, and philosophy among other things. I'm not a professor or specialist in any relevant fields. I found this book an incredibly helpful guide to rigorous thought. This book is definitely not for everyone. Sometimes the author talks too much, but the points are valid and you just need to work through them. This is not light reading, although it is written in a way to be accessible to intelligent readers. You must be willing to put in some work if you are not already well versed in the theory.

I can't wait for the follow up volume where Dr. Carrier actually applies all this to the subject of a historical Jesus. I've now read several of Carrier's books and seen him on some video clips. He's a very articulate man and always seems to have something brilliant to say. I admit that I'm a fan.

Highly recommended to serious readers.

A Long-Overdue Contribution to the Historical Jesus Studies Field
By C. Murphy
When I first became interested in studying the historical Jesus for myself, I decided to get a quick overview of modern scholarship by reading The Historical Jesus: Five Views. What I quickly came to realize after reading only a few chapters is that the study of the historical Jesus is a mess. Not only is there almost no consensus on who the historical Jesus was but there seemed to be very little hope of resolving these differences in any sort of objective or scientific manner. While present-day Jesus scholars have attempted to develop criteria to evaluate what bits of data actually go back to a historical Jesus, as Carrier notes, "the concept of Jesus we're supposed to believe existed is actually getting more confused the more people study it (p.12)." Enter Richard Carrier's book.

Carrier does not set forth a view of the historical Jesus in this volume. Rather, his goal is to "present a new method that solves the problem... so progress can finally be made in the field of Jesus studies (p.15)". His new method is Bayes's Theorem (BT). One need not be an expert in mathematics or even statistics to follow along in the book: a basic understanding of multiplication, division, and fractions will suffice. However, even if your eyes tend to glaze over once Carrier begins to plug in some numbers in the formula, he still adequately conveys conceptually the arguments he is defending.

The main arguments that an amateur reader like myself can take away from Carrier's work are the following:
1) Contrary to what some (most recently, Bart Ehrman) say, history IS a science. "The fact that historical theories rest on far weaker evidence relative to scientific theories, and as a result achieve a far lower degree of certainty, is a difference only in degree, not in kind (p 48)." Thus, when evaluating historical claims and evaluating when the evidence should cause us to believe the claim, history, like science, is Bayesian.
2) Precision is not necessary to apply Bayes's Theorem. "Rules of thumb" will work just fine and be accurate enough for all historical inquiry.
3) Rather than increasing the amount of disagreement among historians due to quibbling over probabilities, BT will actually expose historians' biases and force them to argue for their premises.
4) All current historical methods in Jesus studies (arguments from evidence, arguments to the best explanation, etc..) reduce to Bayes's Theorem. In other words, whether or not something really is the "best explanation" can only be determined by running the probabilities through BT.
5) Current historical Jesus criteria have failed to solve what Carrier calls the "Threshold Problem". In other words, do any of the historical Jesus criteria (dissimilarity, embarrassment, multiple attestation, etc...) in and of themselves tell the historical whether the claim is to be believed? Only by applying BT, argues Carrier.

I highly recommend this book. You need not agree everything Richard Carrier has ever written to recognize that this work is a great contribution to the field of Jesus studies. If it does nothing more than force current scholars in the field on all sides of the debate to abandon the unwarranted certitude many employ to their conclusions and put all arguments through the same, objective test then this book will have served its purpose.

A new methodology for historical Jesus studies!
By Dr Alexander Youngwurz@
CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM
Carrier wastes no time before describing the moribund state of current historical Jesus studies. He cites various analyses which conclude that the recent `method of criteria' fail to produce a consensus. "The entire field of Jesus studies has been left without any valid method". The reason being either invalid criteria, invalid application or a `Threshold Problem' involving the number & weight of criteria and their significance.

THE CONSEQUENCE of this FAILURE is the current multiplicity of plausible Jesus types which abound in the literature. Carrier cites Jesus the Jewish Cynic Sage, Rabbinical Holy Man (or Devoted Pharisee, or Heretical Essene, etc.), Political Revolutionary, Zealot Activist, Apocalyptic Prophet. Messianic Pretender, as well as many other more exotic contenders.
"When everyone picks up the same method, applies it to the same facts, and gets a different result, we can be certain that that method is invalid and should be abandoned."
THE SOLUTION is the application of Bayes's Theorem (BT).

CHAPTER 2: THE BASICS
In WHY HISTORY REQUIRES EXPERTISE, Carrier describes four stages of historic analysis. Textual, literary, source and only last, is historical analysis proper. He then sets down a set of 12 core epistemological assumptions. THE AXIOMS OF HISTORICAL METHOD and discusses them in turn with some illustrative examples mostly derived from ancient times. These are then followed by 12 RULES OF HISTORICAL METHOD which are simply stated without individual comment.

CHAPTER 3: INTRODUCING BAYES'S THEOREM
WHEN DID THE SUN GO OUT? is an interesting example from the Gospels that Carrier analyses both historically and scientifically and then contrasts with a similar hypothetical event from 1983, for the purpose of extolling the different evidentiary probabilities involved. He also introduces the question of lack of evidence or silence from expected sources. Finally concluding that this is "a slam-dunk Argument from Silence" with respect to the nonhistoricity of the Gospel account.
FROM SCIENCE TO HISTORY begins the discussion of BT: "all valid historical reasoning is described by Bayes's Theorem". A gentle nonmathematical exposition canvassing a variety of historical scientific disciplines to purely historical. WHAT IS BAYES'S THEOREM applies more lubricant until at last pg.50 exposes the reader to "this rather daunting equation:", which I shall spare you. There follows immediately a translation "into English" and several pages of explanation where prior probability and what Carrier refers to as consequent probability are discussed.

A BAYESIAN ANALYSIS OF THE DISAPPEARING SUN re-examines the Gospel and 1983 (now assumed fully observed) examples by employing the `daunting equation' in thorough detail with the unsurprising result that the simple arithmetic yields Gospel event 0.01%, 1983 99.9%. As an introduction to BT methodology this is a painless, interesting and instructive exercise and should cause no problem for anyone with a genuine interest in the subject.
WHY BAYES'S THEOREM? further discusses the advantages of employing this methodology and then answers some initial reservations which Carrier has clearly been exposed to over the years.
But what has math to do with history? But math is hard. But history isn't that precise.
Carrier's reply to these legitimate concerns are fulsome and reasonable as he patiently explains the whys & wherefors.
MECHANICS OF BAYES'S THEOREM is "the most math-challenging section of the book". In truth there is very little more in the way of equations, and even then merely a mild extension of the forgoing. Rather there follows an extensive exposition of usage. That is mechanics of prior probability, mechanics of consequent probability, a Venn diagram, consequent probability and historical contingency, the role of conditional probability, the problem of subjective priors, arguing a fortiori, mediating disagreement and a canon of probabilities.

CHAPTER 4: BAYESIAN ANALYSIS OF HISTORICAL METHODS
As specified Carrier proceeds to use BT to analyse;
The Argument From Evidence (AFE)
The Argument to the Best Explanation (ABE)
The Hypothetico-Deductive Method (HDM)
Then is given a Formal Proof of Universal Applicability which is quite brief, except for the caveats and explanatory discussion, but eventually all is well. Next follows,
Bayesian Analysis of the `Smell Test', and the most fun of all,
Bayesian Analysis of the Argument from Silence.

CHAPTER 5: BAYESIAN ANALYSIS OF HISTORICITY CRITERIA
Carrier identifies "at least eighteen distinctive criteria", such as Dissimilarity, Embarrassment, Coherence, etc.
Embarrassment receives the most extensive treatment and falls under the BT axe for a variety of reasons. There follows a SPECIFIC INADEQUACY OF THE CRITERION OF EMBARRASSMENT involving a detailed examination of; Jesus' crucifixion by Romans, Jesus birth in Nazareth, John's baptism of Jesus, Jesus' ignorance of the future, Did Jesus know he was the Son of Man?, Jesus betrayal by Judas Iscariot, And so on ...
The remainder of the criteria fall with increasing rapidity, as do some OTHER CRITERIA.
However, a BAYESIAN ANALYSIS OF EMULATION CRITERIA survive (with modification) and prove most instructive when "Daniel in the lion's den" becomes "Jesus in the empty tomb".
Finally in BAYESIAN DEMONSTRATIONS OF AHISTORICITY "... at first glance it seems surely "Jesus existed" would win out as the most probably hypothesis on BT. In my next volume (On the Historicity of Jesus Christ) I'll reveal that on second glance, that conclusion is not so obvious, and might even be wrong".

CHAPTER 6: THE HARD STUFF
The final chapter addresses "deeper issues regarding the application and applicability of Bayes's Theorem generally". It contains some new maths but is mostly concerned with technical aspects of BT and its use in historical research.

The book is well written with a clear and logical progression of argument. The mathematical development could hardly be more benign and there are many illustrative and entertaining examples to elucidate the details of both methodology and application. A brief Appendix provides a handy summary of the maths. The extensive notes constitute more than 10% of the book and there is a useful index. From a technical and logical perspective it very adequately covers the ground required to underpin Carrier's next volume.

An excellent guide. A must have.
By Nelson J. Rose
I had the opportunity of reading this book prior to its release. Brother Joyner does an excellent job of weaving the spiritual and esoteric elements of Freemasonry into a succinct narrative that is easy to consume. The clarity of his delivery enables the reader to understand and contemplate the jewels of our Craft without going off the deep end of the mystical pond.

This is an excellent guide for Masons, young and old.

Absolutely outstanding interpretation and explanation
By Michael Karpovage
This short read is an absolutely outstanding interpretation and explanation of the initiation ritual of an Entered Apprentice into the Craft of Masonry. I read it in less than a day. The author's writing style in short, crisp sentences, as opposed to long-winded, academic verbiage, makes the explanation of concepts and symbols completely understandable. I especially liked the part on creative visualization. As a Mason of ten years, I found more insight in this short book than I have in any Lodge program. The author even explains why Lodges are lacking in this education within these pages! I highly recommend this book by Brother Joyner to any new EA or any Master Mason still trying to figure out how to map his personal journey. I rank The Masonic Initiate right up there with another of my favorite books on deciphering Masonic origins: The Craft Unmasked by Brother Dr. John Nagy. Looking forward to reading your upcoming books on the next two degrees, Brother Joyner!

I Am the Market: How to Smuggle Cocaine by the Ton, in Five Easy Lessons, by Luca Rastello

A page-turning account of the international cocaine trade, presented as five lessons in how to move tons of the drug across borders

Forget about cocaine concealed in false-bottomed suitcases or swallowed in ovules resistant to gastric juices. When entire national economies are kept afloat by the money from cocaine smuggling, the quantities these tactics represent are meaningless. When a commodity like cocaine becomes a mainstay of the international economy, grams and kilos are irrelevant. Because what is needed to sustain the market is cocaine by the ton.

Tons of cocaine means ships, cargo planes, and containers: large, cumbersome, extremely tangible, and visible amounts of white powder. So how is all that merchandise moved through harbors and airports? How are customs offices deceived, fiscal checks eluded, police networks infiltrated, and documents prepared to disguise mountains of cocaine?

It's done with coca made into cubes, dissolved in liquid, hidden in marble blocks or inside electric cables. With friends in the right places. With cocaine smuggled in cranes. With sniffer dogs supplied to the police, free of charge. With money in cash, always. And yes, with willing mules swallowing drugs. But they will be arrested, and that's part of the plan.

Drawing from years of research and conversations with criminal sources and convicted drug smugglers, with new information on the techniques, methods, and strategies used, Luca Rastello brings us a devastating portrait of the international cocaine trade. Told from the perspective of the formidable entrepreneurs whose tactics evolve and adapt to keep pace with shifts in the global economy, I Am the Market is a masterful exposé of a world we thought we understood—until now.

From Booklist
If La Repubblica journalist Rastellos account of todays cocaine trade has an overly Italian bent, or if his central conceit often distractshe tells the tale in the wise-guy voice of an apparent composite of smugglers he metthis is still a compelling, credible explanation of cocaines clout in the global economy, how and where it is produced, and how it is distributed. For anyone connected to the trade, creativity is key, from expanding the growing areas of the coca leaf to diabolical ways of transporting the drug (as a paste inside electric cable, or by soaking clothes in it for later removal) and moving the cash used to pay for it. There might be a wickedly vicarious thrill to reading this story, but Rastellos narrator was caught in the end. More important, the trade as an issue can only be genuinely engaged when it is understood, and for that, readers have Rastello to thank. --Alan Moores

Review

“Darkly fascinating . . . this nameless coke-smuggling heavy has a jaundiced eye and a keen wit. I Am the Market is a glass-bottomed boat on what the Narrator calls a ‘sea of cocaine’ . . . Part Smithian-liberal treatise (if only the government wouldn't interfere . . . ), part Marxian analysis (the disenfranchised retaking the means of production . . . ), it presents an astute, jaded look at the political economy, in both macro and micro terms, of one of the world's most valuable substances.” —Brian Thomas Gallagher, The Observer

“Most of the people smuggling cocaine today don't even know they're doing it, especially if the cocaine has been disguised using one of the ingenious methods that The Market describes: dissolving powder in water and trapping it between panes of glass, for instance, or smearing it as paste over a consignment of fashionably crusty blue jeans . . . I Am the Market overflows with this kind of juicy tidbit. The notorious practice of having drug ‘mules’ swallow ovules of cocaine wrapped in condoms, he explains, is usually a diversion technique: While customs officers are posing on the evening news with half a kilo of product seized from some poor soul's intestines, the real shipment of maybe half a ton passes through the airport unmolested . . . Many of The Market's revelations will lend ammunition to anyone who thinks that the War on Drugs is a boneheaded exercise in waste and futility.” —Bruno Maddox, The Wall Street Journal

“Luca Rastello, a longtime observer of the criminal economy as a journalist and think-tank director, allows a very experienced Italian ‘sistemista’—a cagey contractor who transports tons of cocaine for cartels—to explain how it works. Rastello opens the book with a quick overview, and then hands the narration over to the unnamed sistemista. He is bri...

Excellent plane reading
By S. Jewell
I read it on a nine hour plane flight, and it was very well suited to it. A relatively short book (I finished it inside 5 hours, but I read quickly), and not one that's overly taxing on the mind. It's full of good stories and anecdotes, and makes for light-hearted reading. Still a fascinating insight into a world totally hidden from the day-to-day lives that most of us live. The tone is very conversational, and it's almost like spending the whole plane ride talking to a fascinating person, a very "civilized" criminal, if that makes sense.

Unfortunately I didn't get spot-checked going through customs - I thought it'd make for a good laugh if I got spot-checked!

A bit less that what I expected
By Pablo Zavaleta
Interesting but a little "light" for my liking.

I was expecting a little bit more of "meat"

I bought it to use it as complementary material in my logistics course here in Bolivia (I don't think that it's necessary to mention Bolivia's place in the value chain for cocaine?). Some concepts/ideas where worthwhile but, with reality being what it is, it fell short.

Great as an introduction to the topic (I haven't been able to find any other source as complete as this book).

A series of drug-trafficking stories rather than an instruction manual.
By Elvis
This book is extremely entertaining and once I picked it up I couldn't put it back down till the end. That being said, the book is more of a set of not-directly-related stories rather than an instruction manual or study of the drug-trafficking problems in the world today.

Entertainment aside, I am skeptical of some of the details in the book. The author is relating these stories from interviews he did with a former prisoner. Can a convicted drug smuggler be trusted to not embellish the stories he tells? Doubtful in my opinion. But then how much does he embellish in order to be entertaining? And does this really matter?

Again, the read is fun and I would not suggest taking any of it as precisely factual. My only other complaint is that the book is so short. Which is the complaint everyone has when they enjoy reading a good story.
