Solid coverage of Oracle backend technologies.

This book was exactly what I needed. I had been struggling for a couple of months to learn all of the pieces needed to build a business application using JDeveloper. I have some Java experience but not a strong J2EE background. There are plenty of resources around that cover XML, Java, JSP/Servlets and non-Oracle frameworks like Struts, Spring and JavaServer Faces (JSF). Don't expect to learn about those things here. But if you are trying to wrap your head around Oracle's Application Development Framework (ADF), this is the place for you. It's the best single source I've seen for that topic. There is a lot of information on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN), but it's scattered and isn't wrapped in a sequential story the way this book's presentation is. Most of ADF Business Component structure has been stable for a couple of years, so the fact that this book is a bit dated doesn't get in the way.

What's missing because of the publication date is coverage of JDeveloper's extensive integration of JSF within ADF. Oracle has set their stake in the ground with JSF as the web client technology, and their ADF Business Components as the backend. It's an elegant combination. This book will give you excellent insight into the backend technologies. The wait is on for similar coverage of the frontend.

Book reading flow is choppy; clearly written by multiple writers, unfortunately.

Whereas this book may have information throughout, that is not what makes good instruction. Some may argue that if you know "XYZ", "ABC", and "concept A" and "concept B", that this book is good.

But one should not have to fight to learn when the concepts are not difficult.

Briefly -- using the examples as given will still bring up errors when trying to run the examples on some people's systems [I found others with the issues I had in the Oracle forums, and was able to fix them; "luckily" for me, the examples that didn't work for me were the same as a number of others, so I didn't have to look far].

As an example of the flow in the book, in the beginning of chapter 8 [which is the beginning of Part II], it essentially summarizes where you are at; it mentions that you've gone through Chapters 1-4, and then it immediately states what is now coming in Part II [not mentioning chapters 5-7, as if the author didn't even know they were there], and then what happens in Part III. It's as if when one of the three writers wrote the beginning of Part II, they weren't aware that there would be three other chapters in Part I. [and this makes sense, because chapter 5 is very much out of place in where it is. Most people already know the Java part of it anyway].

Also, BC4J is talked about much in the first few hundred pages of the book, but really the best explanation for it is on page 224, after you've seen BC4J referenced numerous times already. And I understand this sounds picky while reading one part described, when the biggest issue is that the flow is all over the place.

One shouldn't have to figure out what the authors *meant* to be saying; the authors should say it. [and to reference this example further, the index lets you know you can find BC4J on pages 5, 6, and 109, but no mention of 224. If it did, you might see that the definition given on page 5 is different than the definition given on page 224, because the wording is different [one says BC4J is what came before ADF BC, another says it is just a different name for it].

Some people do not mind having to figure out what the writers were trying to describe, and for you folks, this may be good.

But, if you don't like having to first interpret the book, then learn what you are trying to learn, this is just something to think about.

Good book for beginners, but limited for IT professionals

If you're coming from an Oracle Forms background, or have a technical background, but find the JDeveloper IDE a little too daunting with its mired of windows, this *is* a *good* book to start out with. I read this book front to back, and it does build your confidence in making your way around the IDE and using it's productive features.

The Oracle OTN website also provides a number of tutorials and papers that will do the same thing. The nice thing about this book is that similar tutorials and examples are collated together and presented in a logical progressive structure, so it's good value as apposed to learning everything yourself.

Where the book falls down, once you understand the tool, is how the technology fits together. The book *does* give detail on programmatically attacking the ADF Business Component layer. However discussions and experience on coding from the Struts/client/controller layers with the associated iterators is thin on the ground. Only one chapter mentions UIX, in not enough detail to make you productive, and little mention of ADF Faces which will receive a greater focus of the JDeveloper product in the future.

So in summary, a worthwhile book to pick up if you're just starting - 4 stars. Make sure you do read it from start to end. However don't expect to be writing enterprise level systems at the end of this book.... a lot of hard yards still need to be learnt, or alternatively, an "Advanced" JDeveloper book needs to be written - so this book is 2 stars for advanced users - it's not a handbook as such.... and gets 3 stars all up from me.

About the Author
John Gardner (1933–1982) was born in Batavia, New York. His critically acclaimed books include the novels Grendel, The Sunlight Dialogues, and October Light, for which he received the National Book Critics Circle Award, as well as several works of nonfiction and criticism such as On Becoming a Novelist. He was also a professor of medieval literature and a pioneering creative writing teacher whose students included Raymond Carver and Charles Johnson.

A Fine Edition to My Kindle Library

John Gardner is a master of writing about writing and a wonderful resource for anyone interested in pursuing the art of creating contemporary literary fiction. In spite of the ongoing debate about what qualifies as "moral fiction" (and if there even is such a thing), all three of the titles in this collection are necessary reading for any aspiring creative writer who wants to think about the relationship to process, audience, and narrative theory. Gardner writes about complex ideas through clear language. I often refer to him when teaching writing or writing about writing. It's nice to see all these titles together and at a great price.

About the Author
Craig M. Wright received his Bachelor of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music in 1966 and his Ph.D. in musicology from Harvard University in 1972. He began his teaching career at the University of Kentucky and for the past forty years has been teaching at Yale University, where he is currently the Henry L. and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Music. At Yale, Wright's courses include his perennially popular introductory course, Listening to Music (also part of the offerings of Open Yale Courses); his large lecture course Exploring the Nature of Genius; and most recently his Coursera course Introduction to Classical Music. He is the author of numerous scholarly books and articles on composers ranging from Leoninus to Bach. Wright has also been the recipient of many awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Einstein and Kinkeldey Awards of the American Musicological Society, and the Dent Medal of the International Musicological Society. In 2004, he was awarded the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Chicago. And in 2010 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, joining fellow inductee, banjo player Steve Martin. In addition to LISTENING TO MUSIC and LISTENING TO WESTERN MUSIC, EIGHTH EDITION, Wright has also published THE ESSENTIAL LISTENING TO MUSIC, SECOND EDITION; LISTENING TO MUSIC, CHINESE EDITION (Schirmer Cengage Learning/Three Union Press, 2012), translated and simplified by Profs. Li Xiujung (China Conservatory, Beijing) and Yu Zhigang (Central Conservatory, Beijing), both of whom worked with Wright at Yale; and MUSIC IN WESTERN CIVILIZATION, MEDIA UPDATE (Schirmer Cengage Learning, 2010), with coauthor Bryan Simms. He is currently at work on a volume titled MOZART'S BRAIN: EXPLORING THE NATURE OF GENIUS.

Bryan R. Simms (Bachelor of Arts, Yale University, 1966; Ph.D., Yale University, 1971) has taught since 1976 at the University of Southern California, where he has been director of graduate studies and is currently chair of the department of musicology. He is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Fulbright Foundation. He is the author of books and articles on topics in twentieth-century music and music theory, including MUSIC OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (Schirmer 1996) and, most recently, THE ATONAL MUSIC OF ARNOLD SCHOENBERG, 1908-1923 (Oxford University Press).

About the Author
John Fox, CPT, is a poet, certified poetry therapist, and a lecturer in the Graduate School of Psychology at John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, California. He is the author of two volumes of poetry, My Hand Touches the Sea and When Jewels Sing (audio tape). John also teaches in the California Poets in the Schools Program. He serves as a vice president on the executive board of the National Association of Poetry Therapy and is a recipient of NAPT's Distinguished Service Award.

A wonderful guide to creativity

I have written (often bad) poetry as a means of expressing myself since I was 9 years old. After going through this book, I have been amazed at the depth of feeling that has been hiding in me all these years! You will be amazed at the beautiful poetry you can create given the right tools and instruction. Even if you think you're not creative and can't write a word, I hope you'll try this book...you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that you can create poetry if given the opportunity.

Finding What You Didn't Lose

"Finding What You Didn't Lose: Expressing Your Truth and Creativity Through Poem-making" was my introduction to the field of poetry therapy. Although I have added many poetry therapy texts to my library since acquiring Mr. Fox's book, I still consider "Finding What You Didn't Lose" the premiere text. It is comprehensible; full of useful and thoughtful ideas; and beneficial for anyone seeking to cultivate healing in themselves or others. I am currently undergoing professional training in poetry therapy and find myself returning again and again to Mr. Fox's book. Also, when introducing people to the field of poetry therapy, I always recommend Finding What You Didn't Lose as a foundational text.
