Bradrick A. Joyner was born on April 2nd, 1988, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Aside from writing and lecturing, he is a Father, musician, philosopher, and an active Freemason. Bradrick attended Middle Tennessee State University where he studied The Recording Industry: Productions and Technologies, then later on became a certified Pro-Tools Operator in Music. This gave him the fulfilling opportunity to work as a professional musician and audio engineer. Shortly after the birth of his son in 2011, Bradrick decided to transition from music into the world of writing. In 2014, he published his first book titled: "Ethics, Deductions, & Common Sense." An excellent guide. A must have.

I had the opportunity of reading this book prior to its release. Brother Joyner does an excellent job of weaving the spiritual and esoteric elements of Freemasonry into a succinct narrative that is easy to consume. The clarity of his delivery enables the reader to understand and contemplate the jewels of our Craft without going off the deep end of the mystical pond.

This is an excellent guide for Masons, young and old.

Great book for a new EA as well a someone that is beginning or revisiting Masonic education. This is a quick but good read that does a wonderful job of stimulating further questions and encouraging deeper thought.

Absolutely outstanding interpretation and explanation

This short read is an absolutely outstanding interpretation and explanation of the initiation ritual of an Entered Apprentice into the Craft of Masonry. I read it in less than a day. The author's writing style in short, crisp sentences, as opposed to long-winded, academic verbiage, makes the explanation of concepts and symbols completely understandable. I especially liked the part on creative visualization. As a Mason of ten years, I found more insight in this short book than I have in any Lodge program. The author even explains why Lodges are lacking in this education within these pages! I highly recommend this book by Brother Joyner to any new EA or any Master Mason still trying to figure out how to map his personal journey. I rank The Masonic Initiate right up there with another of my favorite books on deciphering Masonic origins: The Craft Unmasked by Brother Dr. John Nagy. Looking forward to reading your upcoming books on the next two degrees, Brother Joyner!

Excellent plane reading

I read it on a nine hour plane flight, and it was very well suited to it. A relatively short book (I finished it inside 5 hours, but I read quickly), and not one that's overly taxing on the mind. It's full of good stories and anecdotes, and makes for light-hearted reading. Still a fascinating insight into a world totally hidden from the day-to-day lives that most of us live. The tone is very conversational, and it's almost like spending the whole plane ride talking to a fascinating person, a very "civilized" criminal, if that makes sense.

Unfortunately I didn't get spot-checked going through customs - I thought it'd make for a good laugh if I got spot-checked!

A bit less that what I expected

Interesting but a little "light" for my liking.

I was expecting a little bit more of "meat"

I bought it to use it as complementary material in my logistics course here in Bolivia (I don't think that it's necessary to mention Bolivia's place in the value chain for cocaine?). Some concepts/ideas where worthwhile but, with reality being what it is, it fell short.

Great as an introduction to the topic (I haven't been able to find any other source as complete as this book).

A series of drug-trafficking stories rather than an instruction manual.

This book is extremely entertaining and once I picked it up I couldn't put it back down till the end. That being said, the book is more of a set of not-directly-related stories rather than an instruction manual or study of the drug-trafficking problems in the world today.

Entertainment aside, I am skeptical of some of the details in the book. The author is relating these stories from interviews he did with a former prisoner. Can a convicted drug smuggler be trusted to not embellish the stories he tells? Doubtful in my opinion. But then how much does he embellish in order to be entertaining? And does this really matter?

Again, the read is fun and I would not suggest taking any of it as precisely factual. My only other complaint is that the book is so short. Which is the complaint everyone has when they enjoy reading a good story.

About the Author

Ian Moir, Moir Associates, UK, After 20 years in the royal Air Force as an engineering officer, Ian went on to Smiths Industries in the UK where he was involved in a number of advanced projects. Since retiring from Smiths he is now in demand as a highly respected consultant. Ian has broad and detailed experience working in aircraft avionics systems in both military and civil aircraft. From the RAF Tornado and Apache helicopter to the Boeing 777, Ian's work has kept him at the forefront of new system developments and integrated systems in the areas of more-electric technology and systems implementations. He has a special interest in fostering training and education in aerospace engineering.

Allan Seabridge, Seabridge Systems Ltd, UK, Allan Seabridge retired as Head of Flight Systems Engineering after a long career with BAE Systems. He has 36 years experience in aerospace systems engineering, business development and research & development, with major projects worked on including Canberra, Jaguar, Tornado, EAP, Typhoon & Nimrod. Since retiring he has developed an interest in engineering education leading to the design and delivery of systems and engineering courses at a number of UK universities at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He also provides technical consultancy to companies in the aerospace industry.

Malcolm Jukes, UK, Malcolm Jukes has over 35 years experience in the aerospace industry, mostly working for the Smiths Group at Cheltenham, UK, Among his many responsibilities as Chief Engineer for Defence Systems Cheltenham, Malcolm managed the design and experimental flight trials of the first UK Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS).  Malcolm is now an aerospace consultant operating in the areas of displays, display systems, and mission computing.

Set in the Bronx, New York, in 1888, it is the story of 12-year-old Milton Daub who ventures into a killer blizzard to bring food and medicine to his stranded neighbors. Walking on homemade snowshoes, Milton doesn't realize the dangers of his mission until it is almost too late. Only when he returns home to his frightened family does the boy know how lucky and how brave he has been. Based on an actual incident which has become a part of regional American folklore, this story is an excellent read-aloud choice, full of suspense and imagery. The narrator paces the reading well, and children will follow the story easily. Sound effects such as the crack of a falling branch, the barking of dogs, and the whistling wind are used sparingly but effectively. The page-turn signal is the sound of an actual page turning. Child readers will appreciate not only the read-aloud format but also the riveting story of a true yet unwitting hero of their own age. This will be a welcome addition to read-along collections in school and public libraries.

Very Interesting Book

The "On My Own History" series is excellent for below, at, and above grade level readers. This particular book elicited great discussion about selflessness, blizzards, and the time period. I recently used this book with middle school students (comprised of Regular and Special Education and ELL). I paired it with non-fiction text pertaining to blizzards. They were very engaged in the books.

I purchased this book for my 10 year old that has trouble with reading. It was a good book for his age and didn't make him feel like a baby to read it. It also has a great moral.

In this montage of essays, first published in 1935, the Marxist philosopher explained the rise of German fascism in terms of primitive and archaic survivals in modern society (such as racism and pagan beliefs) and manifestations unique to a mass capitalistic society (such as adoration of movie stars and dance marathons). He also explored using these irrational elements to further the aims of socialism and devoted attention to phenomena that seem capable of aiding the development of a progressive consciousness. Although the translators are to be praised for their attempt at rendering this insightful study into English, their overly literal adherence to Bloch's oblique German style and occasionally confusing Britishisms make it difficult to recommend this work to anyone but the specialist.

Should be required for Western Civ

This close reading of the Nazi party during its rise to power after World War I is staggering in its depth. The utopian aspect that seemed lacking in Spirit of Utopia is clearly developing throughout these texts over time, and the eventual outcome of the Nazi regime and its overthrow can be understood more clearly in effecting The Principle of Hope once Heritage of Our Times has been read. Bloch also deals specifically with issues of race, including the poor treatment of black Americans during this time, decades before America allowed any real Civil Rights movement. Bloch's frustration with an ineffectual communist party comes across at times, but his hope for the future success of those in the Party is equally apparent. I hope that doesn't make this a tragic text, simply a hopeful one.
