About the Author
Martin Windrow was born in 1944 and educated at Wellington College. Since the 1970s he has worked in book publishing as a commissioning and art editor specializing in military and aviation history, and is currently a freelance editor and writer working from his home in Sussex, England. He is an Associate of the Royal Historical Society and of the Foreign Legion Association of Great Britain. In 2004 his major study The Last Valley: Dien Bien Phu and the French Defeat in Vietnam was published to critical acclaim in Britain and the US.

Another Osprey winner!

Osprey does it again! They have produced a very nice pocket compendium of military uniforms from all over the ages and continents that is great! Some of the pictures do come from other Osprey series but many are not and are of great quality. This is a great book for both a yourng reader early in their studies of military history and an avid collector. Great pricing and a great book, glad I have a copy

Warrior Garb Through the Centuries!

Martin Windrow's WARRIORS, FIGHTING MEN AND THEIR UNIFORMS is a quick, once-over guide to warrior garb from 1288 BC to the present. A 2015 Osprey Publishing release, it will serve as an enjoyable, colorful primer on the subject for military fans of all ages.

Windrow's book spotlights 100 examples of garb divided into 'The Ancient World,' 'The Medieval World,' 'Early Modern Warfare,' 'Imperial Wars,' '19th Century Wars,' etc. The first entry describes/illustrates a War chariot of Ramses II circa 1288 BC. The last entry covers Russian Spetsnaz troops circa 2008-2014. Other entries include 5th Century Frankish warriors, 14th Century Welsh and English archers, Napoleonic War French infantry, 1863 CSA volunteers, 1940 British troops, 11th Century Norman knights, 18th Century Great Lakes Indian tribes, 1914 German troops, 14th Century Japanese noblemen, 1960s VC guerillas, 1st Century Celtic light warriors and so on. Each entry gets a two-page write-up with an accompanying color artwork by Angus McBride, John Pohl, Michael Johnson and other artists. Spoiler alert: The artwork is lifted from various Osprey ELITE and MAA volumes.

Given its wealth of nicely-rendered illustrations and easy-on-the-pocketbook price of $14.95, WARRIORS would make a good stocking stuffer for military buffs. Recommended.

A must have in your library if you're researcher or biologist in the wildlife profession.

This is a quick, easy read, but very well put together. Excellent information on how science in the wildlife management field is or should be conducted, and elucidates a lot of pitfalls that any practitioner in the field should be aware of. It also re-iterates a lot of classic work on the subject that old-time practitioners will remember, but also provide more up-to-date cases that professionals will find useful and interesting. A must read in the wildlife management profession, particularly if you're engaged in research. The take home message in much of this book is the importance of critical thinking in this profession.

Everything they didn't teach you in undergrad. For anyone in natural resource sciences or those just interested in the philosophy of science this book is a great foundation. If you are in the field of natural resource science your education is not complete until you have read this book.

Interesting concepts and ideas

A pretty good book overall bringing up some good potential flaws with natural resource research and some good ideas to consider. The book seems to be more targeted towards academic faculty illustrating what the author believes to be ingenious ideas unabashedly delivered, but could be read and understood by m.s. students especially towards the end of their schooling. Natural resource professionals would likely benefit from the authors points about the ridiculousness of some practices and lack of common sense in favor of often rigid restrictions, especially in regards to publishing. Would recommend.

Another thinly veiled advertisement for the author's website

What a disappointment! Almost nothing of real value. Of the many dozens of books on daytrading, and I own most of them, only a handful present useful information that you can actually utilize. Tony Oz, Jea Yu, Joe Dinapoli, Toni Turner and Linda Raschke are your best sources. I intend to either return this waste of paper and ink or sell it. Frankly I would hate to rip someone off so I hope I can return it for a credit. I had high hopes, I even ordered this six weeks before it was published.

Hey, if you are like me and have a full-time job while you trade, then I think that you will find this book valuable. This is real world stuff from a real trader. I mean, if failure is the best teacher then this guy can has learned alot. In the book, Borsellino talks about how he worked over $4 million down to $100K and what he learned from it. That's the best part about this book, lessons like that broken down into a simple set of rules to trade by. Another plus, Borsellino gives you his support and resistance levels every day on the S&Ps free on TradingMarkets.com!

A Complete Insight Into The Day Trader's Course

Lewis Borsellino has earned a reputation as one of the greatest for his 20 years of pit trading at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Now that computers have brought trading to offices and homes around the world, Lewis is able to teach people lessons he has learned the hard way and that are as applicable now as they ever were. This book offers the essential ingredients that have given the author what it takes to become one of the best. Through Lewis' real-world experiences, the virtues of mental preparation, technical analysis, devising a trading plan, execution and discipline, should hit home with clarity.

The first chapter of the book is dedicated to mental preparation, and the importance of fully understanding the basic truths about trading. Lewis has seen people from all types of professions think they can take what they have learned in their fields and apply it to trading. This is not the case. When Lewis shares his experiences, it is clear that the market requires a certain "frame of mind" that is like nothing else.

At one point in Lewis' career, he had gained $4.5 million in profits, but saw it evaporate to only $100,000. From this loss, he learned that certain errors in his thinking were the culprits. For example, trading in big size may be good for the ego, but it can get you into situations that a poor market won't accommodate for. As Lewis said:

"I couldn't fling around hundreds of contracts to satisfy my ego or because people in the pit expected that of me. I had to trade what suited both my own plan and the market conditions. After that my trading was noticeably on track."

With a proper mindset in place, a good trader needs a good plan to execute. Essential to Lewis' plan is technical analysis. According to Mr. Borsellino, technical analysis, as far as drawing up the images, is the easy part; interpreting them is where the real expertise comes in. With this book as your guide, insight into what Lewis looks for in a chart will be made clear. The goal here is to identify the trend at an early stage and stay with the trend until it has ceased. Just learning the patterns will only get you so far, it takes the advice of a real pro to gain a superior edge in the markets.

The most important aspect of trading for Lewis is discipline. This means adhering to a plan, focusing on the trade, not the money, and goal setting. Without discipline, the best strategies in the world will fall apart. Knowing when, and when not to trade, as well as not letting matters outside of trading interfere with your decisions, are the results of practicing good discipline. This challenge is something even Lewis deals with now in his career. Through sharing personal experiences, the author gives tips and advice on how to incorporate good discipline, and to avoid common pitfalls that will wreak havoc on your account. Again, just being familiar with the importance of discipline is one thing, but having Lewis as your guide is a real treat.

I will admit that I am a trading book junky and find something to learn from just about everything I pick up. But this one comes from the perspective of one of the world's greatest, and with co-author Patricia Crisafulli, this well-written read will help solidify what's really important when it comes to obtaining success. Do yourself a favor...

This book is a must have. Covers just about, if not, everything you need to know about Branding. Not a big fan of how Chapter 3 was written. Let's just say the Professor who wrote/contributed to Chapter 3 felt the need to flex his English skills - unecessary over the top vocabulary. Chapter 4 is the best chapter - Competitive Brand Strategies. Uber came to mind this entire chapter regarding their pioneer advantage. If you wish to have a solid grasp of Branding, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

An Invaluable Single Source of Information and Counsel

The last time I checked, Amazon and its online partner Borders sell more than 8,000 different books on the general subject of brands and brand management. Presumably this number will continue to increase as organizations become more actively involved with marketing initiatives which effectively leverage one or more brands.

What we have here is one of the volumes which comprise a series produced by faculty members at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. It was edited by Alice M. Tybout and Tim Calkins who co-authored the Preface; Philip Kotler provides the Foreword and Calkins the Introduction.

I feel obligated to suggest at the outset that none of the volumes in this series is an "easy read." On the contrary, each requires but will generously reward a careful consideration of its contents which, in this volume, are carefully organized within four Sections:

I (Chapters 1-3) Key Branding Concepts

II (Chapters 4-6) Strategies for Building and Leveraging Brands

III (Chapters 7-13) From Strategy to Implementation

IV (Chapters 14-20) Branding Insights from Senior Managers

There are five themes which are rigorously examined through the narrative: brand positioning, brand design, brand meaning, leveraging a brand, creating a brand-driven organization, and then three chapters are devoted to issues on measurement. I especially appreciate the provision of various frameworks, check-lists (e.g. the five-step process for designing a brand on page 38), "Figures" (e.g Whirlpool's Touch Point Wheel" on page 230), and other tools to assist the reader with clarifying her or his thoughts about branding in terms the specific needs and interests of his or her organization.

Although taken out of context, the following three excerpts are representative of the high quality of thinking and writing throughout this book:

"The word brand has a tripartite etymology. One emphasis clusters around burning, with connotations both of fiery consummation and of banking the hearth. A second emphasis clusters around marking, with connotations of ownership and indelibility, as well as paradoxical allusions to intrinsic essence, whether or merit or stigma. A third emphasis clusters around the delivery of, or deliverance from, danger (stoke, anneal, cauterize; conflagration, possession, aggression). The brand embodies the transformative heat of passion, properly tended. It is bestowed and it is earned. The brand bespeaks the forging of a family." John F. Sherry, Jr. on "Brand Meaning," page 41.

"There are several sources of pioneering advantage. All are derived from the pioneer's unique role in creating the category, in defining the dimensions on which brands compete, and in influencing the importance buyers attach to perceived differences. Simply put, the pioneer plays a unique role... It is perceived different from others, and that perception is valuable in several ways....A pioneer can become the standard against which later entrants are judged simply by establishing the category and being viewed as the near-ideal product. This strong association with the product category means that virtually all other products in the category are now judged by the established standard. Standards in markets take at least two forms -- psychological standards and technological standards." Gregory S. Carpenter and Kent Nakamoto on "Competitive Strategies," pages 75 and 77.

"The differences between technology markets and CPG [consumer packaged goods] markets from a branding standpoint can be categorized into differences related to the market, differences related to products, differences related to customer behavior, and differences related to channels and ecosystems. I use this categorization scheme to discuss the challenges and principles of branding in technology markets. Figure 11.1 [pages 204 and 205] summarizes the key contextual dimensions that form the basis of contrasting brands in technology markets with branding in CPG markets." This book will be of greatest value to those senior-level executives who need to know their customers better and how to get closer to them, who need expert counsel on how to differentiate what they offer and then with formulating appropriate branding strategies which position their offering, not only as relevant to the given target market but indeed superior in value to whatever is offered by competitors.

Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out Kellogg on Marketing edited by Dawn Iacobucci and Kellogg on Integrated Marketing co-edited by David Dranove and Sonia Marciano. I also recommend Harvard Business Review on Brand Management, Alina Wheeler's Designing Brand Identity, William J. A Thorough Analysis on Branding

I picked up "Kellogg on Branding" from Amazon because my company was embarking on a branding exercise. As part of the team, I wanted to get well-versed in the theoretical and practical implications of branding and brand management. Little did I realize that I have picked up a gem.

First and foremost, this is an academic book, some of which may cause a reader to gloss over, especially if they are just looking for easy bullet point overviews. Nonetheless, I found this to be a goldmine of information.

A collection of articles and research by some of the by faculty at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University covering a range of issues. Specifically, the book covers branding concepts in the first three chapters, strategies for building and leveraging brands, strategy to implimentation, and branding insights.

I found the last chapters (14 through 20) to be the most interesting as they were written by senior executives at firms. Whether it was a discussion on there individual companies leveraged their brand, to using their brand internally, it was the more "Practical" section of the book.

Thats not to diminish the other sections of the book. In one collection we have a guide for branding in the tech sector, to managing a brand portfolio, to design and positioning. Each with a wealth of information for anyone looking at their own companies and trying to make sense of branding, brand strategy and brand management.

Needless to say, this volume armed me quite well for our branding initiatives.

Again, this is a detailed book, and not a gloss over. If you can read this with the attention to detail "Kellogg on Branding" offers, then you will be well rewarded. If not, you may want to look elsewhere.

Regardless, I highly recommend.

For everyone who is interested in Asset Allocation - Global or not

I do not personally know the author and I have never met him. I have not communicated with him regarding either this book or any of his other books. My only association with Meb Faber is from me reading his blog and his books. I was privileged to get a pre-print of this book for review because I responded to an email solicitation. Even though I have a pre-print, I will purchase the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short book. Below are a few brief points about what I consider the highlights from each of the chapters. My personal commentary is at the end of this review.

Chapter One:
Why it's a bad idea to hold cash long term.
There is a pretty amusing (and correct) take down of Zerohedge's dollar crash charts.
A great look across major countries returns on bills, bonds and equity vs inflation.
Nominal returns vs real returns. This is important to understand for wealth preservation.

Chapter Two
The importance of understanding the length of time spent in drawdown.
Understanding future returns (they won't be stellar at the time of this writing).
The importance of going Global.

Chapter 3
Why Market Cap and GDP suggest holding only 50% (or less) of your portfolio in US assets.
The Global 60/40 portfolio - increases returns and reduces volatility (by a bit).
But why just Stocks and bonds?
13 assets classes examined since 1973.
Interestingly, Gold and Commodities had by far the worst Sharpe ratio over this time.
"It is a sad fact that as an investor, you are either at an all-time high with your portfolio or in a drawdown - there is no middle ground - and the largest drawdown will always be in your future."
Figure 24 of the 13 assest class returns in different regimes is excellent and valuable.

Chapter 4 - Risk Parity and All Seasons - Ray Dalio (Bridgewater)
Real returns in the inflationary 70's were negative (73-81).

The portfolio was altered to include commodities to the benefit of an extra 1% per annum with not much more volatility. This is an example of how diversification and back testing may improve a portfolio.

Chapters 7-10 Lots more portfolios:
These chapters show portfolios from Rob Arnott, Marc Faber (no relation to the author), Warren Buffet, Mohammad El-Arian, David Swensen, The Ivy Portfolio (Meb Faber)
Much like the previous chapters, Chapters 7-10 show nominal and real returns from 1973-2014. Over the long term, real returns are similar with the Buffett portfolio mimicking stock returns and the attendant volatility that comes with it. Not surprising considering it's 90% stocks making it the most non-diversified of the portfolios studied.
According to the author, the Marc Faber portfolio was the most consistent portfolio reported in this book.

Chapter 11 - Summary of Strategies
Make sure you read and understand this summary chapter. Indeed, the conclusion reached by the author surprised even him. At one point he states: "To me, that is astonishing". What is so astonishing? In brief, it doesn't really matter which allocation you pick. The *real* returns are nearly the same. If you take out the permanent portfolio which technically had the worst returns, the remaining portfolios are within oh, about 1/2 of 1%. And since you can't predict which portfolio will do what in the coming years, just pick one and get on with your life. An equally (if not more) important fact is costs, costs, and costs. If you pay an advisor 1-2%, you will turn the very best performing portfolio into the very worst performing portfolio. It's a simple as that. So keep your costs under control and pick a portfolio you like.

Chapter 12 - Implementation
This is a good chapter for those not familiar with what assets to actually use - or even those who do. What I like about this chapter is that it directs you to the things needed to actually build your portfolio (this is done throughout the book - also see Appendix A for pre-built portfolios from some well-known robo-advisor's). You already know the weights (and even that isn't all that significant). The other thing the author talks about is taxes. Lots of authors talk about investing or trading but they don't get into discussing the impact of taxes nearly enough. Taxes are a vital area to know about as they will take by far the biggest chunk of your earnings. If you were surprised by the impact of advisor fees (also discussed in this chapter), then you really need to understand the impact of taxes. I really appreciate it when authors use their knowledge in very specific ways. This chapter as well as other chapters in the book demonstrates that.

Chapter 13 - Summary
The author's opinions and wisdom are distilled down to 10 brief points. They are:
1. Any asset by itself can experience catastrophic losses.
2. Diversifying your portfolio by including uncorrelated assets is truly the only free lunch.
3. 60/40 has been a decent benchmark, but due to current valuations, it is unlikely to deliver strong returns going forward.
4. At a minimum, an investor should consider moving to a global 60/40 portfolio to reflect the global market capitalization, and especially now due to lower valuations in foreign markets.
5. Consider including real assets such as commodities, real estate, and TIPS in your portfolio.
6. Once you have determined your asset allocation mix, or policy portfolio, stick with it.
7. The exact percentage allocations don't matter than much.
8. Make sure to implement the portfolio with a focus on fees and taxes.
9. Consider using an advisor or other automated investment service in order to make it easier to stick to the portfolio and rebalancing schedule.
10. Go live your life and don't worry about your portfolio!

My Thoughts
OK, after this long-ish review, here's what I think. The book is of significant value (if you take an estimate of the value and divide it by the ridiculously paltry price, you get something of incredible value). The research is solid and the numbers unassailable. Even though I've described what I consider to be the highlights, you really need to read the book for the excellent data. Staring at the data for a while will really help you internalize the reality of asset allocation. Although not an apples-to-apple comparison (far from it), I recently read and reviewed Tony Robbin's book. That was a good book but really long. Tony is a talker - it's what he does for a living after all (and he is among the best at what he does - motivational speaking and life coaching). But there were times I was getting worn out by the length of material verses the significance of it. Not so with Meb's book. This thing is a gem. You can read it quickly and know all that you really need to know. Further, Tony was in full promotion mode for a single portfolio and an asset manager that charges too much. I commented in my Amazon review that if Tony really wanted to help people, he would have come up with a low cost solution. Amazingly, a very short time after I did that review, Meb Faber introduced the world's first no-management-fee ETF. Incredible. Meb actually did what I thought Tony should have done. Kudo's to Meb then! So grab a copy of this book and read it. The cost is essentially free (if you had to buy this quality research from and advisor or brokerage, I dare say it would be in the $100's or $1000's). Read it and you will learn something. You will be more informed about asset allocation and ultimately be better off for it.

Eating Cat Food in Retirement

I have enjoyed reading Meb Faber's other books, because he usually makes clear points backed up with succinct analysis. While this quick read had a robust and engrossing beginning, it fizzled beyond the first couple chapters. Let me explain.

The book opens with a warning about how the 60/40 portfolio with a US-bias will surely fall flat (I agree) and that bonds will surely have negative real yields going forward (I agree). However, following this important warning, the author presents "famous" asset allocation profiles that are equally bond heavy without issuing a similar warning.

How would these asset allocations be spared the same fate that he warned against in the beginning of the book if they are so heavily weighted in an asset class so completely sucked dry of any possible yield or growth?

The author implies that adding "real assets" such as REITs, TIPS, commodities, gold would help spare the portfolio. However, many real assets have also been sucked dry of yield and growth, leaving nothing but a desiccated carcass. This fact should be mentioned, but it is not. Surely, some poor soul will read this book and put a third of their assets in a REIT ETF and wind up getting kicked in the giblets.

Then hidden in the appendix is Figure 48 from Credit Suisse which shows how bond holders will probably end up eating cat food in retirement. This book left me hanging.

Anyone familiar with Meb Faber (prolific writer and commentator on finance - books, twitter etc) knows that he is unusually thoughtful and his writing is often brimming with insight. This book is no exception. This book fills a hole by taking a bunch of suggested asset allocation strategies and running them through an empirical return examination since ~1970. The takeaway is predictable: primarily diversification is good.

The big argument of the book is that fees are really terrible - transform best strategy to worst. The major insight for me was not only that fees have an immediate cost but that the opportunity cost of that extra few hundred basis points of compounding is much greater over long time horizons (than even the "accounting cost" of fees).

I gave it four stars because I found 80% of it fairly predictable. Still worth it for the few critical insights.

Kudos to the author for not complicating things by having too many key messages.
